Multiple breaking and developing stories are underway in the U.S. and around the world.ÿ

Here is a special breaking newsletter with the latest:

    GERMANY THEATER ATTACK:

An assailant who attacked a German cinema[1] has been killed, a German official said. Authorities said police responded to an early report of shots fired by a man with a rifle.ÿ

    SUPREME COURT:

The high court issued rulings on two pressing issues: affirmative action and immigration.

In the immigration case[2], the justices delivered a crushing blow to the White House. The court's 4-4 ruling on President Obama's executive actions on immigration means that a lower court ruling blocking the programs will remain in effect. Obama expressed disappointment, saying the decision "takes us further from the country that we aspire to be."

The Supreme Court alsoÿupheld the University of Texas practice of using applicants' race as a factor in admissions.ÿThe 4-3 ruling greenlights the limited use of affirmative action policies[3] by schools.

    FREDDIE GRAY CASE:

The Baltimore police officer driving the van when Freddie Gray was fatally injured in April 2015 was found not guilty on all charges. The officer, Caesar Goodson[4], faced the most serious charges of all the police charged in the case. Goodson opted for a bench trial presided over by Judge Barry Williams, rather than a trial by jury.

    HOUSE SIT-IN:

Republicans tried to shut it down, but the Democrats' now 24-hour-long sit-in protesting the lack of action on gun control[5]ÿafter the nightclub massacre in Orlando is still going strong.ÿThe protest startedÿWednesday morning, and House Minority leader Nancy Pelosiÿlater said the sit-in would continue "until hell freezes over."ÿ

    EU REFERENDUM:

Meanwhile, voters in the UK [6]are deciding if Britain will remain in the European Union.

Stay tuned to CNN on whatever screen is nearest to you for the latest updates on all these stories and more.ÿ

The decision by the United Kingdom to leave the European Union is having a ripple effect around the world Friday, with British Prime Minister David Cameron announcing his resignation and global markets tumbling.

    Here's the latest:

Cameron, who opposed the Brexit, says he will step down[1] -- but didn't give an exact timetable for his departure. And who might replace him? Maybe Boris Johnson[2], the former mayor of London who was a leading proponent of the move to leave the EU. Johnson is one of the country's most popular and eccentric politicians. But he's gone from a figure of fun to a serious contender to replace Cameron.ÿÿÿ

    MARKETS PLUNGE

The news is crushing global financial markets[3].ÿThe pound plunged[4] to its lowest level in more than 30 years before recovering a bit.

Stocks in London and Europe took one of their biggest falls[5] in
years.ÿLondon's FTSE 100 index plunged as much as 8% at one point. The FTSE 250 index dropped 7.5%. Many analysts see the FTSE 250 as a more accurate reflection of the British economy.

    o Germany'sÿDAX[6]ÿis down 7%
    o The FrenchÿCAC[7]ÿis plunging 8%
o Stocks in Ireland are down nearly 10%

Dow futures[8], which indicate how shares in the U.S. will open at 9:30 a.m. ET, dropped 500 points.

Asian investors panicked[9] as well.ÿJapan's benchmark Nikkei closed down 7.9%, with shares in Hong Kong and Australia slumping about 3%.

    BANKS REEL

The global banking industry[10] also is reeling. But the Bank of England expressed confidence in the resilience of the UK's ÿfinancial sector, and said it was ready to provide support if needed.

WHAT DOES BREXIT MEAN FOR THE BRITISH?

It could affectÿeverything[11]ÿfromÿhome prices, to tourism, universities and EU citizens living in Britain.

WHAT DOES BREXIT MEAN FOR THE UK?ÿ

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that the option for a second independence referendum is being considered. "Scotland voted to stay in the EU. It is democratically unacceptable to be taken out of EU against our will."

AND WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE EUROPEAN UNION?

There are 27 countries still in the EU. The decision by the UK to go it alone leaves the jilted European Union[12] with some tough soul-searching of its own as it contemplates a new future.

Shooters killed five officers[1] and wounded six during protests against police in downtown Dallas, markingÿthe deadliest incident for police[2] since September 11, 2001, when 72 officers died. The gunfire started Thursday night as demonstrators marched against the shooting deaths of two African-American men by police in Louisiana[3] and Minnesota[4].

    Here's the latest:

President Barack Obama[5] called the shootings "a vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement."[6]

"There is no possible justification for these kinds of attacks or any violence against law enforcement," Obama said, speaking from the NATO summit in Poland. "Anyone involved in the senseless murders will be held fully accountable. Justice will be done."

Ten police officers were shot[7] during the protests, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said. An 11th officer was shot during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect, authorities said.

Three people are in custody. One suspect died after an hours-long standoff with police in a downtown parking garage. Before he died, he warned bombs had been placed throughout the city.

"The suspect told our negotiators that the end is coming," Brown said. The suspect at the garage also told negotiators more officers are going to get hurt, and that bombs are planted all over downtown Dallas.

K-9 units swept the area for possible bombs. None were found.

At the National Prayer Breakfast, a solemn occasion with a rich history, President Trump spent more than a minute talking about his former reality show "The Apprentice."[1]

He used the occasion to jokingly call for prayers for its new host Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"Ratings went right down the tubes. It's been a total disaster," he said.

The keynote speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast was Barry Black, the chaplain of the United States Senate.

Moved by Black's remarks, Trump lauded him.

"I don't know if you're Democrat or Republican, but I'm appointing you for another year. The hell with it."

    TESTY EXCHANGES

Trump also told the audience that when they hear of the tough phone calls he's having with foreign leaders, not to worry about it.

During the US President's call with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Saturday, Trump objected to an agreement over the US receiving refugees, sources told CNN.[2]

Trump abruptly ended the call because he was unhappy, a source said.

All this a day after a call with Mexico's President, where a transcript showed Trump complaining about Mexico's "handling" of "tough hombres."
