Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are waging what may be the nastiest presidential debate in US history. Follow updates and watch it on CNN.[1]

Trying to shake off the fallout from a decade-old video, Trump repeatedly said the vulgar language he used about women was just "locker room talk" before pivoting to accusations about Bill Clinton and his plans to fight ISIS. He called the former president "abusive."

Clinton said she had been thinking carefully about Trump's video. "It represents exactly who he is," she said. Get CNN's Reality Check.[2]

Trump also said he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton if he is elected president. "You'd be in jail," he told her at the debate.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump ended a scorched-earth debate with a handshake.[1]

Earlier, when pressed by co-moderator Anderson Cooper, the Republican nominee seemingly dismissed the significance of sexually aggressive language he used toward women a decade ago. With Clinton's husband and daughter inÿthe audience, Trump lashed into Bill Clinton's infidelities.

Clinton said that she had differed before with Republicans over policy.

"I never questioned their fitness to serve," she said. "Donald Trump is different."

In a twist, Trump slapped down his own running mate, Mike Pence, when the conversation turned to foreign policy. At last week's vice presidential debate, Pence said the US should be prepared to strike Syrian government targets to alleviate the siege of Aleppo.

"He and I haven't spoken, and I disagree," Trump said.

The candidates were asked by the final questioner to name one positive thing they respected about each other. Clinton referred to Trump's children, and Trump said: "She's a fighter."

Donald Trump exceeded expectations, but Hillary Clinton won the second presidential debate, according to a CNN/ORC poll of debate watchers[1].

The results showed a clear victory for Clinton, with 57% saying she won, as opposed to 34% for Trump.

It's a strong showing for Clinton, but not as good as her performance at the first presidential debate, when 62% of debate watchers said she won.

The results Sunday also track closely with watchers' pre-debate preference. Fifty-eight percent of debate watchers said they were supporting Clinton before the debate.

The final presidential debate for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump began on a frosty note as the candidates again abandoned the tradition of shaking hands at the outset.

Follow updates and watch coverage on CNN.[1]

There have been moments of serious clashes, including over Trump's relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Republican nominee's immigration positions.

"We have some bad hombres here, and we're gonna get them out," Trump said.

But overall, the first part of the debate was dominated with exchanges over substantive policy issues,ÿharkening back to previous election cycles that lacked the bitter personal battles of 2016.

Clinton said the Supreme Court should "stand on the side of the American people, not on the side of powerful corporations and the wealthy."

Trump said that the Supreme Court is "what it is all about" and rebuked liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for criticizing him before later apologizing. He warned that if Clinton were President, she would gut Americans' right to bear arms.

Clinton denied that she opposes the Second Amendment but called for legislation that included comprehensive background checks and efforts to close the so-called gunshow loophole.

The candidates also clashed over abortion rights, with Clinton insisting she would defend Planned Parenthood and the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision.

Trump hit back saying she would allow late-term abortions. "You can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb in the ninth month," Trump said.

Clinton accused Trump of adopting "scare rhetoric" on the issue.

Donald Trump refused to say he would accept the result of the presidential election in November.

"I will look at it at the time," he said at the final presidential debate. "I'll keep you in suspense."

Hillary Clinton called his response "horrifying."

Donald Trump's refusal to say he would accept the results of the presidential election[1] exposed a divide with Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence, who told CNN's Wolf Blitzer before the debate "we'll certainly accept the outcome."

Trump's campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, told CNN's Dana Bash after the debate that Trump will "accept the results of the election because he's going to win the election."

Trump's refusal could become a defining moment of the campaign. It marked an extraordinary departure from one of the most fundamental principles of American democracy: the peaceful transfer of power after an election. The candidates avoided shaking hands at the debate.

A CNN/ORC instant poll found that 52% of debate watchers viewed Hillary Clinton as the winner of the final presidential debate[1], compared to 39% who felt the same about Donald Trump.

Some Republicans were quick to condemn[2] Trump's refusal to say he would accept the outcome of the presidential election.

Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who has been a strong critic of his party's nominee, tweeted, ".@realDonaldTrump saying that he might not accept election results is beyond the pale."
