With Star Trek's 50th anniversary looming (and the new movie opening today), I wrote a story for our newspaper here in St. Louis: 50 things we still love about Star Trek.

Ugh, they picked ST:IV for "Favorite Movie". That was arguably only
the third best TOS film. VI: The Undiscovered Country and II: The
Wrath of Khan are far more Trek-like.
And they picked the NCC-1701 refit for "Favorite Ship Design"? No
mention of the Enterprise E, or the extremely awesome Romulan Warbirds?
I may suggest #51, however, "Favorite Star Trek Podcast" go to "The Greatest Generation (A Star Trek Podcast by two guys who are a little embarassed to have a Star Trek podcast)"

That's one of my favorite podcasts these days. I'll watch the show on Netflix right before the podcast episode.

I thought Star Trek IV was a fairly good one. And it seemed popular at the time. They put a lot of humor into it, but when I watched it again not too long ago, I thought the movie seemed a bit dated now, but still a good one. I agree though that The Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country were great ones.I do like IV, but I think they just picked it because it was popular... II and VI are much better films in just about every aspect.
For a while, the 1701 refit (or 1701-A) was my favorite, at least for the Enterprise. But I'd say the Enterprise D or E is probably my favorite now.

In 2006, someone made a 40-year Star Trek tribute video that I thought
was pretty good. I grew up watching Star Trek (mainly starting with
TNG), and I know it sounds corny, but watching this video got me almost teary, since I feel like Star Trek has given us so much: https://youtu.be/x3pOkhU9iYM

The reboot movies, although quite watchable standalone, don't feel like "Star Trek", and lack some of the depth of the earlier movies.
I grew up with reruns of TOS. When TNG came along, I instantly took to that series, as well as all that followed.
Lots of good ships to choose from. The refit was a big step visually at the time, but I believe it has been surpassed. :)

I was amazed when I watched the DVD versions of TOS and saw scenes I'd never seen before. I didn't see them on the first run, only in
syndicated re-runs in the 70s. They made strategic cuts to make room
for more commercials!
In the episode "what are little girls made of", before Kirk goes into
the cloning machine, he mutters something about "You halfbreed
something or other" as they duplicate him - the same thing the clone
says to Spock that convinces Spock that something isn't right.

Alternate reality 1701-D, with the big gun at the front and 3 nacelles.
:)

There are quite a few "favorites" to go through.. Admittedly I haven't gone through all of them yet, but it seems some of these are a bit arbitrary. Favorite Spock skill or Capt. Kirk skill? And favorite OSHA violation? I didn't know people really talked about that. :)
Favorite omnipotent alien: I agree, although how many omnipotent aliens were there in Star Trek? I remember maybe one other that could be considered omnipotent (the cloud that the Enterprise D ran into that presented a face of itself to communicate with the crew toward the end).
Favorite character fusion: Again, how many character fusions were there in Star Trek? Tuvix is the only one I remember off the top of my head.
A favorite Star Trek movie could be debated forever.. I thought Star Trek
IV was pretty good, but personally, since I watched a lot of TNG, I liked First Contact.

There were plenty of godlike aliens in TOS. Trelane (Squire of Gothos) immediately comes to mind. Doing a quick Google search, I see that the Memory Alpha wiki even has a whole page dedicated to listing "powerful and godlike beings" in Trek: http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Powerful_and_godlike_beings

When I wrote this category I also had in mind the end of ST:TMP. when V'Ger and Decker merge to evolve into a "higher" life form.

I like First Contact, but in recent years, I have been convinced by "Red Letter Media" that none of the TNG movies really captured the spirit of the show. Picard, in particular, was transformed from a deliberate, thoughtful, consensus-seaking leader into a vengeful action hero. You might enjoy watching RLM's Star Trek reviews: http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/star-trek/
Star Trek on TV was often thoughtful and cerebral, but it seems to me that movies tend to be less so.
Could this be a post-Roddenberry thing? He was consistent in trying to provide social commentary, wonder if that was lost on the people who took the flag after his passing.

I'm not sure.. I thought some of the original Star Trek movies were a
bit less cerebral, even when Roddenberry was still alive (such as Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home). I
suppose The Voyage Home had some social commentary (Save The Whales),
but still it seems to me that they tried to put a lot of humor and
action in it.

The Wrath of Khan was one of the best for me. I keep watching it once a year. It gave a sense of real adventure and story of the past as well
as insight in to Kirk. As a boy I had no idea he had a wife. I know
this isn't related to 'Cerebral' but I just wanted to chime in about
Star Trek 2.
I am really curious about that new Trek series.

I'm looking forward to it. Have Netflix (who have the distribution rights for it here in .au) standing by. :)

Here in Canada it's going to be on a service called Shomi, it's a kind
a Hulu for Canada. It's lucky for them to have this series because I
was thinking about dropping that service. Wish it was on Netflix
instead. Now it's like every dying cable network want to create it's
own service.
Foxtel (the main cable/satellite network here) also have their own
streaming service, so seems that trend is global. Anyway, I'm glad Netflix got the rights. :)

I'm curious too. But from the screenshots they've shown so far, I
think the ship looks ugly. It looks very similar to the re-designed Enterprise they almost used for the Star Trek: Phase II TV show in the late 70s, which they cancelled in favor of Star Trek: The Motion
Picture.

If we're talking about the new series, I've heard a few years before
the NCC-1701 as well. However, I've also heard that it will be between TOS and the Movies and after Voyager (though it's been a while since I heard that particular one)
