Getting struck by lightning is likely due to NOT being weather aware,
or heeding "safety rules".

I do NOT take any chances with weather...no matter if it's severe
storms (large hail, high winds, flooding rain, intense lightning, and tornadoes), winter storms (snow, sleet, freezing rain), intense heat,
bitter cold, etc.

I check the Storm Prediction Center website several times a day, as
well as the local National Weather Service website, and the National
Hurricane Center Website. With doing 2 weather related ham radio
traffic nets a week, I *HAVE* to be informed...and will NOT let
hazardous weather take me by surprise.

Many people treat the forecast as a "Post Office Box"...checking it
only once a week, thinking it'll never change. Instead, it's like a
baby's diaper. The Forecast needs to be changed often, and if it
affects your outdoor plans, it stinks...puns intended. Meteorology is
such an inexact science, with at least 2 dozen computer models...all
of which handle a weather situation differently.

I even unplug everything in my apartment that's not necessary to
receiving severe weather information, if there's a threat of lightning.
All the surge protection in the world will NOT protect you from a
direct or close lightning strike, which:

1) Can be 5 miles long
2) Is 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5 times hotter than the sun's surface)
3) Has 300,000 volts and 30,000 amps of electricity
4) Can strike as much as 20 miles from the parent thunderstorm

While the refrigerator/freezer, stove, and dishwasher, stay plugged
in, they are part of the apartment...and I don't have to worry about
replacing them if they get zapped.

Plus, I will NOT be on the phone during a thunderstorm. The preacher
who married my late wife and I in 2003, was the victim of a lightning
strike, that literally sent him across the room of his house (he was
on the phone during a thunderstorm). He survived, but would never be
on the phone during a thunderstorm again.

I've seen thunderstorms develop in as little as 10 minutes, then
becoming severe with large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes, less
than 10 minutes later. I've also noted them moving as fast as 100 mph.
That gives folks downstream little time to take shelter.

Being a weather geek, I have. But, I am also weather aware. If a
thunderstorm is within 20 miles of me, I get to a secure indoor
shelter.

I am NOT going to be like the four guys in a fishing boat near
Shreveport, Louisiana, back in May, 1987, on a lake on a Sunday morning.
A thunderstorm developed, and one of the individuals got up, shook his
fist toward Heaven, and dared God to strike him dead!!

He was obliged, and killed instantly.

By rights, the other 3 should've been killed from the strike as well,
being in a metal boat on the water. However, they were totally unharmed.

To me, that's an example of Divine Judgment, and Divine Protection in
one whack...because the first individual got exactly what he asked for,
and got more than he bargained for.

I can remember a sign at a Golden Corral we entered in Colorado, that said no smoking or vapors! Later, we started discovering similiar signs at other restaraunts and grocery stores.

While that puts the BBS stuff on the back burner, taking care of her is
far more important. She did so much for me over the years, that it's the
least that I can do.

more and more restraunts are going to no vapors as well.

There is a Golden Corral in North Little Rock, and their buffet (especially for desserts) is to die for!!

don't like breakfast during the after noone, but every time I go to golden
coral, I have to grab some eggs and bacon!

i have mixed feelings about minimum wage. the bare minimum wage jobs, i feel should stay the same rate. if there's no skill involved and not much work you shouldnt make a lot more.

on the other hand i know in manufacturing there are some devil companies that expect a lot but pay very little.

For the one in North Little Rock, I think they only do a breakfast deal on the weekends, but I'm not sure. Two other area restaurants, Western Sizzlin,
do a breakfast buffet on weekends, and they're located in Jacksonville (just south of the Little Rock Air Force Base), and in Benton.

I've got a ways to go yet. AARP lets you apply for membership if you're 50, and the senior discount for the Kroger grocery stores is at 55.

I worked for Burger King for 5 years in central Arkansas nearly 40 years
ago, then worked in silkscreen printing for 18 years. One thing I liked
about Burger King is that their burgers are "flame broiled", and all of the excess grease falls into a drip pan, that is cleaned out after closing. Not like other places where the burger is "swimming in grease". :P

Well, just for grins, I deleted the original Multi-Mail directory
contents, and removed it from the hard drive. I then opened the archive
of MMWIN050.ZIP and ran the install program under Windows 7 32-bit. For whatever reason, since then, I've never had a problem with it...but I
still have OLX on standby, as it were.

I prefer MM, because you can get longer taglines.

On another note, I'm sure you saw where AES (Amateur Electronic Supply)
is closing their 4 locations (Milwaukee, Cleveland, Orlando, and Las Vegas)
at the end of the month. However, HRO (Ham Radio Outlet) is going to do a
full remodel on the AES Milwaukee location after it closes, and reopen it
as the largest HRO location in the country. I think that makes HRO the
biggest "candy store" in the country, but I hope they will also have a
service department. Yet nowadays, it's cheaper to buy a new rig (or any
other device), than to send if off for repairs.

Lastly, I also reset the BBS software to Synchronet for the BBS's 24th birthday. Unfortunately, I couldn't import the user data, so I had to reset
it. But, if you logon, I'll upgrade you within 24 hours...weather permitting
of course.

On that line, severe weather blasted through the region the last 2 nights. Thursday night, there was widespread wind damage and power outages, along
with a Tornado Warning for my area. Then last night, the Little Rock
National Airport got 2.28 inches of rain in an hour...1.72 inches of that
in just 30 minutes. There was hellacious flooding there, plus in and
around the downtown area. My power was out for an hour, but my internet
was out from Thursday night until Saturday morning.

Yep, they're pretty strict on it here too. There's also drug testing, mostly for cannabis and methamphetamine, which is picking up a lot of drug affected drivers. While I'm all for road safety, I'm not quite sure they've got the technology and enforcement quite right yet.

Yep, they're pretty strict on it here too. There's also drug testing, mostly for cannabis and methamphetamine, which is picking up a lot of drug affected drivers. While I'm all for road safety, I'm not quite sure
they've got the technology and enforcement quite right yet.

whats the test for cannabis? all we have is hair and piss. is there a way
to tell if they are on it right then?

It's a saliva text. They have 2 indicator tests in the field (one on the roadside, the other in a drug/booze bus or a police station), with a lab analysis being the final decider.

it can hang around in your system a long time. i just dont know how they can gauge that you are 'high' on the drug at that moment.

Yeah, that I'm not too sure. I personally think more work needs to be done on marijuana testing, and also I do know people who actually _do_ function better on some dose, who don't seem to get high.

I've got a ways to go yet. AARP lets you apply for membership if you're 50, and the senior discount for the Kroger grocery stores is at 55.

Around here, law enforcement really ramps up the DUI checkpoints, both locally, and on the interstates. The lady who does my monthly cleaning
got caught DUI, but since it was her first offense, she didn't have to go to jail. She did, however, have to pay a fine, have a breathalyzer put in her car, and pay court costs. I quipped to her that she probably wished she could just run around nude, with a hanging sign that she was DUI... she laughed and said "Really...it would've saved me some money". But, she added that "I learned my lesson".

Well, in Louisiana, they advertise what date, time, and location down to the street that the police will be setting up a DUI checkpoint on. And stupid thing is, they still get DUI's! But, corruption allows for various young ladies to get off by paying a small fee to the D.A. and they don't have to put a breathalyzer in their car, or have high-risk insurance. In fact, one girl killed a young boy on Christmas Day, was out on good behavior, and that she promised to be a good little girl. I think within a week or two she had another DUI charge against her... I bet the judge that gave her the reduced sentence wanted to kick his self when he saw her coming back in for a second DUI....

Interesting. However, their "supplemental Insurance Plan" requires one
to be at least 62, IIRC. I had asked about this awhile back, and was
curtly told "I wasn't old enough".

I was talking to a vendor yesterday about the drug screening they use and
I learned about a cheek swab.

yeah, my employer is doing cheek swabs for new employees. i dont know how accurate it is, though.

We look at doing cheek swabs and stuck with pee tests but doing it orally can detect drugs after the most recent use and I think up to four (maybe it was five) days. Pee tests aren't as accurate supposedly.

We hair test all of our manager trainees once they are finished with their
in the field training and sent to the corporate office for the final week.
It's amazing how many guys I have seen completely shave their bodies thinking that will save them. Idiots. In that case it quickly changes from hair to
blood test and they take a REAL good long look at that person again.

There's a great marketing scheme! Repackage some off-brand gum, like maybe Quench gum, that gum that makes your mouth water up for when you're playing sports outdoors?

(Make sure to chew thoroughly then spit out the saliva before your test)

And if your scam fails, what are they going to do? Go to the BBB and complain that your gum didn't clear up their positive test for weed, Horse NyQuil and amphetamines?
