• Solar Pi intermittent availability

From Kc2ugv@VERT to All on Tue Jul 12 21:00:37 2016
Just an FYI, my BBS will have intermittent availability over the next couple of days, due to heat. We've had 90+ days and the Pi is finally showing problems related to the heat.

I'm in the process of ordering a cooling can for the case, and a bug screen (The systems is outdoors) to keep these issues at bay.

When I "engineered" the system, I was expecting highs of 80's for extended periods, not highs in the 90s.

    So, apologies in advance.

A similar situation is true here...but it's because everyone is cranking up their air conditioners to keep cool, and it's causing brownouts. Or, you have some idiot who doesn't obey the speed limit, crashes into a power pole, and puts several areas in the dark.

Another concern for Arkansas in the heat is severe thunderstorms. When the intense heat builds up, there is usually a layer of warm air aloft (a cap)
that prevents thunderstorm development. But, if the cap breaks, explosive thunderstorm development can occur. With the intense heat that has built
up, when the storm collapses, the downburst winds can easily exceed
hurricane force. If that wasn't enough, the storms in Arkansas are
prolific lightning producers. Florida may be the lightning capitol of the world, but Arkansas has to be a close second.

And, no amount of surge protection will save your electronic equipment
from a direct or nearby lightning strike.

so when it rains is it going to blow up?
why not just have the solar panels outside?

No, it'll be fine with rain/snow. The Pi itself is located in a waterproof case (An ammo box, actually). Once I installed the cooling fan/bug screen, I'll have to look how to prevent water ingress, likely with a downward duct.

As for just having the panel outside, and the pi inside, that will likely happen down the road, once I start encountering problems my engineering wont solve :)

Kc2ugv, can I ask what setup you have for your solar and primary power storage?
