From Matthew Munson@VERT to KNIGHT on Sun Aug 7 03:45:00 2016
I had some thoughts on how to grow the BBS community. After reading thousands of net messages, I came to terms that most of the users
are sysops. And then I read a glowing post by a regular user (who quickly announced that he wasn't a sysop) who was excited to be a part
of things. It reminded me that if we toned down all the "sysop presence" and made it more about the regular users, that people would
begin to feel more comfortable. I'm suggesting that maybe since 90%+ of the people here are sysops that it might be slightly
intimidating to the folks who are 1) not technical and 2) not involved in the operation of BBSes themselves. Though I've taken no formal
    survey or anything...
We have to keep things simple so we can get the users from Facebook and
Twitter who are fed up of the censorship.

really? facebook is going nuts with censorship and twitter has been stepping it up for the past six months.

facebook has censored everything from what names we use on their site to what we post privately and publically to friends.

twitter used to let people do pretty much whatever they want but some celebs went public with people trolling them.

    There's a difference between "Cencorship" and blocking out-right hate-speech.
Most of the people that have been banned for doing such things are levying actual physical
threats, or making statements that would make some of Donald Trump's supporters say "er, no, that's over the line there, mate".

Facebook uses algorithms to display what it thinks is of interest to you when you view your feed. If you like, comment, or react to certain posts, it will show you more
    posts like that.

Twitter is like a firehose, everything gets launched at you as it comes in. Facebook filters it to what it thinks you're most likely to be interested in based on your
    previous activities.

(The amount of data facebook collects to do this filtering is what should really scare the bajeesus out of you)

When Spotify first came out, I thought I'd wait a bit before trying it out. When I got around to it, the option to log on to their service with email/password was gone, and you *had* to have a Facebook account to log on. I'm more concerned about Facebook using its size and reach to spread usage
of their identity services as a means to increase their user base.

Reminds me of Yahoo when they went on their buying spree.

I know I've been "suspended" in the past and I hadn't done anything.

My web site got a "Pure Spam" ban from Google and was totally removed from their search indexes. Nothing in their help files was helpful, as my site is all my content - tech notes I've written and photos I've taken, hosted on my own site. At no point was a google employee available to assist by phone or email - they routed you to a forum populated by other users.

It took 3 evaluations and about a month and a half before their automated system removed the ban. I'd have been pissed if I was losing ad revenue and couldn't talk to a human.

I listened to "Into the Plex", by Steven Levy, an audiobook about the start of Google, and they flaunted the lack of customer service as a feature.

I hate google almost as much as facebook.

It's a love/hate relationship; as long as it benefits you and you're aware of the cost to you for the service, it makes sense.

To figure the cost, subtract the amount you pay for the service by the revenues of the company divided by the number of users. :) If you're not paying for it, you're not the customer, you're the product.

The things ad-tech can do with tracking data is insane. They know how old you are,

I mean pretty much any 'public' service you access on the Internet is ad driven or you're paying out of pocket for it.

You use Netflix? You're paying a monthly bill. You use HULU? You're either paying
a large fee and getting no ads, or you're paying a lower fee and getting some ads.

You use Spotify? You're either paying for no ads or getting it 'free' and getting

    Facebook? Ads.

Pretty much anything that has content also has advertisements that fund it, and you
are 'paying' with the time you see/hear/watch the ads, just like broadcast television.

Personally I don't give much of a crap at this point, if they're going
    to use that
data to target me for specific ads, at least it's going to be for
    stuff I like.
Maybe I'll get a new Doctor Who T-shirt, or be introduced to a new
    comic book.

I'd much rather see ads like that than something for "Hot singles in
    your area
    want to hook up"

    Amen!

I mean pretty much any 'public' service you access on the Internet is ad driven or you're paying out of pocket for it.

You use Netflix? You're paying a monthly bill. You use HULU? You're either paying
a large fee and getting no ads, or you're paying a lower fee and getting some ads.

I use Netflix and I do not get any ads. I have disc's sent to me and that way I do not have to deal with that. I do not do the streaming thing cause they do not have enough stuff in there streaming section so disc's work out the best for me.

You use Spotify? You're either paying for no ads or getting it 'free' and getting
    ads.

As for spotify I do not use that so I get no ads from them.

    Facebook? Ads.

Facebook is a waste of time and I do get any of there crap either. Facewbook is useless.

Pretty much anything that has content also has advertisements that fund it, and you
are 'paying' with the time you see/hear/watch the ads, just like broadcast television.

Now TV sucks because of all the ads but that is what they make a mute button for an dia use that alot when I do watch TV. But I only watch the news and that is about it for me and TV.

Let's clarify - the internet is paid for by ISP costs, companies on the world wide web are selling your eyeballs and social information to advertisers.

My SPAM folder has been entertaining. At first I kept getting match.com and other dating site spam. Along with those came ads offering to help me with issues related to length, girth and (wtf?) volume?

Then came the overseas wives spams. Then ashleymadison.com ads. Then, I started receiving ads for OurTime, an over 50 dating site.

They've decided I've all but given up on sex. Now I'm getting ads for GolfMates.com.

I promise. If I ever get to your state I will post every single
thing about how horrible the GBP is and how Brett Farve is a poofter.

C'mon now. That's about all we have around these parts. Good cheese and the Packers. And now apparantly a bunch of Black Lives Matter riots because a black cop killed a black kid who pointed a stolen gun (that was used earlier in a shooting) at him. It's super exciting down here! You should visit! :)

Agreed. Nothing is free. You 'pay' for Internet? Actually you're paying for ACCESS to it. The Internet is ad driven...

what do you mean by ad driven? if you are talking about who pays for
the internet that is the isps.

I mean pretty much any 'public' service you access on the Internet is
ad driven or you're paying out of pocket for it.

I can't stand it much more. Adds everything is just about adds, medical adds, attorney adds, buy a car adds, all the time adds. Its disgusting. Just once I would love to see someone run some commercial (without the commerce) how to fix your headache without a pill, or something like that benefiting the target demographic that doesn't require some service to buy.

Don't hold your breath... Just a fact of life. I do things for free all
the time but I also sell my music (downloads and CD's). I run a Car Wars
PBEM game for free, but I also have a Patreon set up for those that DO
    want to help.

Bottom line, there are still things that are done for the good of others
from the goodness of people's hearts, but don't expect it from the
corporate bean counters and bottom liners.

and dont expect people to appreciate it. i've seen people just get depressed about running things for people for free. you cant expect people to treat you like a real person in today's age.

I listened to "Into the Plex", by Steven Levy, an audiobook about the start of Google, and they flaunted the lack of customer service as a feature.

They are one of the biggest most wealthy companies around so I guess
it is a feature. THey have figured out how to make even more money by
not having anyone to help their customers.

If the service is free, you're not the customer, you're the product.
