  • BBS on Laptops

    Yeah, that's exactly what happened with mine. Had to move it from my old
    laptop to my personal desktop (for now) although I am planning on putting it
    on a low-end PC and sticking it back in my basement with all my HA stuff
    pretty soon.

    i had a laptop as my main computer that was always on for like 3 years.
    what i did was cut a wire that regulated the fan speed so it ran full speed all the time. the code that was supposed to raise and lower the fanspeed as needed was borked. also i got one of those clip on fans but i doubt that even helped.

    it was a gaming laptop so it got hot sometimes. i took off the cover on the bottom sometimes. a regular laptop should be ok

    Yeah, that's exactly what happened with mine. Had to move it from my old laptop to my personal desktop (for now) although I am planning on putting it on a low-end PC and sticking it back in my basement with all my HA stuff pretty soon.

    I've been on a cleaning binge lately; I tossed a bin full of EIDE and PATA drives now that I tossed the old EIDE BBS box; tossed any router less than single-band N, an old DSL router, a bunch of broken laptops and more.

    When the laptop fails I'll probably go to a VM permanently.

    That's true, and anyway this is going to happen, regardless your
    computer is a laptop or a full fledged desktop. All fans have
    MTBFs. ;(

    And Thinkpad fans are cheap.
