Imagine going back to the 80's and explaing to someone, even to yourself, how in 30 years computers would be EXPONENTIALLY more powerful (Processor, memory, bus speeds, storage space, modem speeds, etc). Also how there had been an African-American President for two terms and the first woman would likely win the next Presidential election. They (you) would be grateful for that, but then disappointed to hear things like how the middle east was still a mess (worse even), that the main things people used those powerful computers and internet for were to post videos of cats and argue with perfect strangers, etc. lol

Or that even tho these computers would have so much memory and disk and processor, and the speeds of communications were near real-time, and all we're really doing is sending emails like we're doing in the 80's over dialup.

Games and game consoles and computers are actually the same now (game systems ARE pcs), and basically nothing has changed.

Today I was just thinking about how boring my IT job is and how i dread managing yet another boring change to our company's website... It's 2016. Why are we still using computers and browsers, and concerned with WEBSITES. uggg.

When oh when will the next big thing happen so i can get excited about something again, I've had a computer since 1982...

Exactly. And sometimes you can download stuff on your phone faster than you can on the internet... I've been in spots with no wifi / ethernet and used my phone as a 4G hotspot for laptop or tablet with awesome performance.

Phones today are more powerful than our pcs of the past.

Remember the days "before" smartphones when we marvelled at GPS on a PDA?

Oh yes. I had such a great time with theses devices.

Started with a Palm IIII. Still remember that I was always carrying extra
AAA Batteries all the time for it.
Then i graduated to a palm III clone, a TRGpro that was accepting compact
flash card, was identical to a Palm III in every way.

Then I finally switched to colour with the palm m130. I still own it but
the battery don't hold its charge, will have to see if I could find a new battery for it.

The one I love the most was I believed theirs coolest. ( non treo phone) is
the tugsten T3 with its collapsible screen. It's could do anything a iPod
touch second generation could do and so much more. Like running mame and emulating the Amiga 500.

Since the palm III I was already reading and buying ebook. Pre loading
website with apps like Avantgo and plucker. Was using a newsreader to get message from forum on synchronet.

Wasn't as user friendly as iOS platform or android to set all theses up but
    it was really dooeable.

I'm sure pda showed the was for the smart phone we use today

Everything old is new again. I remember during the first dot-com boom in 1999/2000, Palm came out with the Palm VII, the wireless model that used the packet network. They couldn't do TCP/IP, so you had to download a PQA (Palm Query App) to connect through a proxy on their end.

Now, everyone's steering you away from mobile browsing and onto a dedicated phone app.

And Avantgo - I'd forgotten about that -- I used to clip all of my main sites to read on the way to work.

Franklin Covey, the people who made their millions selling paper planners and a productivity/values system got into the game. They sold a Palm app, a Windows app, and binders that could hold a Palm and paper. I used one for a while, but never got the hang of the Outlook app.

That does it; I'm going on eBay to buy a Palm for old time's sake - to see what I could do in a memory footprint a fraction the size of the Facebook app on my phone. :)

Yep - when we were geocaching heavy back in the day we'd download a file, process that through a third party software, then I'd use a homemade cable
to upload the waypoints to a handheld GPS.

Before that we would punch in the coordinates by hand. :-)

Oh yes. I had such a great time with theses devices.

Started with a Palm IIII. Still remember that I was always carrying
extra AAA Batteries all the time for it.
Then i graduated to a palm III clone, a TRGpro that was accepting
compact flash card, was identical to a Palm III in every way.

I used Palm a while too, then switched to a Sony Clie' (it would play
MP3's as well). Ah - the 'good ole days.' LOL

WeirdStuff Warehouse in Sunnyvale had a handspring Visor in clear, IN THE BOX, with all accessories. I was tempted.

Clie where great. On theirs last model was amazing with the camera. Only drawback i could find then was the proprietary memory-stick card :-)

I had a co-worker that had it them and it was awesome.

They've been in Sunnyvale, CA since at least the late 80s. WW and Halted Specialties right down the road used to get very odd surplus crap from the valley back when it was all aerospace and computer manufacturing.

It's been 20 years since I've been home. I remember WSW being down the
street from the original Fry's near Lawrence Expressway on Oakmead Pkwy. I do not have any recollection of it being on W Caribbean Dr like it is now.
