BTW, does anyone know how to get an OS/2 box with VMODEM to accept telnet traffic on an alternate port? I have the router set up to send port 26 traffic to the OS/2 box. When I had the Synchronet telnet on an alternate port, it was pretty easy. Just change an ini setting. I cannot find any config settings that control the inbound port for VMODEM. Any connection attempts to port 26 on that box are rejected.

Could you do port translation at the router? that is what i do for some
of my port, so for example at the router side for example 2222 is open
but it send it traffic to 192.168.1.210 at port 22 for example. So on
the pc everything run at it's original port, it's at the router that i rewire stuff. sometime it's simpler that try to configure an old equipments new tricks.

Could you change the router's NAT redirection to redirect port 26 from the outside to port 23 on the OS/2 box?
I agree, this would be the easiest way. I'd be doubtful if the router couldn't do the port translation. Only time this wouldn't work is if
you're not using NAT (i.e. have a public IP on the OS/2 box).
Well, I did try the External 26 to Internal 23 & the IP of the OS2machine,
but no dice. To be honest, it does not look like the traffic is even getting to the OS2 box. At least VMODEM is not ever seeing it. I am starting to wonder if I did not break something. :)

Yes if you dmz the os/2 box it's something else.
But what i did in a case is to dmz a second router that did the translating. but it was more also in a setup where i wanted to protect
an home network from stuff open to public with a 3 router solution.
This was the home network was never in direct contact with open or "unsafe" stuff like internet-of- things stuff.
if the router can't do translation one's can allways check if the
router can use a open-source firmware like dd-wrt. This firmware can do
so much.
try a tool like Steve Gibson's free post scan to see what is open on your box https://www.grc.com/shieldsup i know synchronet now also offer a similar service but i can remember the url right now. so you could see what is open or not from the outside world. would give you a good clue if your provider is blocking stuff in between.
Curently, running a VM using a ThinkCentre M58p with 4GB RAM. It's quiet, has a small 300 watt power supply and a small PC form factor. You can pick one up for around $80. SBBS runs on a Virtualbox VM with Windows 7 32 bit to run old door games.
