I was big into the Commodore dialup BBS scene back in the day and never even heard of Xmobuf. CCGMS was the most popular. http://commodore.software/downloads/category/59-ccgms
Before CCGMS I used Multi-term. http://commodore.software/downloads/category/69-multiterm
Both are very good, try them both and see which you prefer.
