Looks like Cox has gotten wise and realized the trend of the more "cord-cutting" privy customere who opt forgo TV service all-together in lieu of subscribing to the highest tier internet service they are willing to pay for isn't going to end anytime soon, so they might as well cater to them. (Been
one of those type of customers for the past six years.) Last week they offered me their Contour TV service at $15/month ($18.56/month after fees). Wasn't going to bite, but they tossed in all the HBO's and StarZ's, so took the bait. Its "not bad" for just $18, but there are a few caveats. Can't Airplay, even local channels, because of draconian licensing. Only a few channels, the bottom-of-barrel-type channels can be viewed over LTE. PQ with Contour application isn't all that great, but viewable. I don't really care about these gotcha's as the only thing I've really watched remotely were locals being streamed from home OTA (HDHomeRun tuners) or my NAS movie collection (Plex). However, they do give you a (free rental) box that is 1080p-crispy on your TV.
Another unfortunate, for me, was that AMC wasn't in the lineup nor could be added. I'd have to jump to a $84/month just for AMC. Sorry, TWD, you are entertaining but not $84/month entertaining. This plan is a 12/month (can cancel anytime) kind of deal, but you know how that goes with cable companies -- at the end of your plan you just tell them you want to cancel and they either extend you or offer you something else. Apparently their sales rep have a pretty liberal range of selling..

Cox doesn't provide service where I am, but I had Comcast internet & basic cable TV until last year. I don't watch much TV, and the only reason I added basic cable TV with Comcast was to avoid problems getting stations over the air. Turned out that the TV box that Comcast provided only gave a standard-definition, square image - Basically, I could tune in a better picture over the air (digital widescreen). I finally decided to call Comcast and ask them to remove my cable TV, and they said my bill would go up. So, when I moved last year, I found that Frontier (formerly Verizon) FIOS was available, so I switched to Frontier internet. With just internet service from Frontier, I'm paying less than I was paying with Comcast. And with Frontier, I'm getting the same speed for both upload & download, which is nice.

I'm still surprised that a cable TV company would charge customers money for a standard-definition cable box when we've had high-definition digital broadcasting over the air for about 9(?) years in the US.

If they didn't provide a crappy SD box they couldn't upcharge for the HD one.

I must admit, those little DTV boxes are complete shit, and now that they've recoded every single channel to *only* work with their boxes, you're forced to rent them for what.. $2.99-$3.99 for each TV? I have 4 friggin TVs in our house. Screw that. I have one HD box in the main living room, and every other TV can use Netflix and Hulu only. At least until they upgrade their TWC app to work on more than just a Samsung TV. When that happens, you won't need any boxes in your house as you can access everything from their app (Right now the app is only limited to Samsung TVs, PS4/XBoxOne, and Android devices though).

    Regards,
    Nick

Yeah, they went to digital signalling, reminded me of switching cell phones to analog. Worse coverage, worse audio, cost more and they got to cram more compressed digital traffic into less bandwidth. Progress!
