Whereabouts in Wisconsin? There happens to be a few other sysops (including myself) still around. I'm in Pewaukee.

I called BBSs in Wisconsin in the 90's. What did you have going on back then?

We were Castle Rock BBS, located in Appleton. We ran Proboard with Intermail front end. I had us hooked up with Fidonet and about 8 others at one time. I was online from 1993 until 1998.

I was aware of WoW, but never connected with them. Back in the day, it was l
distance to call them, and I was trying to keep costs down. From what I heard,
they were a very large system.

for the wausau area in the 80's/90's one could say it was large, a couple hundred users in it's peek.
i miss those days.

My BBS still has a dial-up line. :)
Hook it into SIMNET, thats what I did with my POTS line, people call my number and then can choose from either MY system, or others on the network, there are three other numbers in the US linked in and one in Finland and another in Romania. kinda cool.

I think at our peak, we were at around 200 users. I kinda miss that sound to
but I also really enjoy the higher speeds we have now. Maybe we could look for
a sound file that we could play before we connect to a BBS. lol

Well, I do still have a caller or two that, for whatever reason, prefer the modem to the telnet. However, I think a lot of folks who call in are

are one-time callers, either for nostalgic purposes or to test out some old equipment... they call using a C64 or some-such.
Still I like the idea that folks can fire up an old machine and
actually have a place that they can connect to with it. :) So, I
don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. Only thing I worry about (knock-on-wood!) is what happens if the modem ever stops working. :o

Making it a hub, connecting it to information sources, such as HAM & Datapackets, and a generator for power, would give me all the tools to make it a information stronghold in post-disaster recovery. It's a big dream for a hobby, but I have been assembling the parts and am getting hopeful that it could be pulled off.
That is a big dream for a hobby, but also an interesting one. I like the weathercentric ideas also. For years, I have been porting some NWS products I get from a listserv into one of my ftn echos, and some others into a local message area. Back in the day, before the internet took off, people actually read them. I doubt they do now, but I still do it. :)

I'm working on getting my system on line. One of my walls is that I only ha one analogue line comming into the house.
Another wall, is that I don't have that much unique content on my board at t moment. On my website, I had generated hurricane tracking maps for about 9 years, until my job got to be too much a job and took my personal life away from me. I'm in recovery now. I'm limiting time spent at work and I'm rebuilding the hurricane site from the ground up using new technologies. I' looking at porting the products created on that site to Jay's Cafe' and then flipping on the dial-in line.
I have additional thoughts about using it as a information dial-in repository/communications hub in the time of disaster recovery. I live in South Eastern Louisiana and when the storms hit, generally, all that is available are phone lines.
Making it a hub, connecting it to information sources, such as HAM & Datapackets, and a generator for power, would give me all the tools to make a information stronghold in post-disaster recovery. It's a big dream for a hobby, but I have been assembling the parts and am getting hopeful that it could be pulled off.

The next thing to do would be to get a hostname that dynamically updates
IP address so it's easier for people to connect to your BBS.

Looks like it made it, though it's missing the tear & origin lines.
Make sure your message base type is set to "Echomail" or "Networked" in Mystic and those will be added to the end of your message.
