    Hi

I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Dan, and I'm new to the network. I ran a BBS back in the 90's in Wisconsin, and was involved in a fair number of networks. I recently set up Synchronet on the computer and have been playing around with it.

I'm looking forward to being more active in some of the message bases. I'm also trying to get back into fidonet, and maybe a few other networks.

    Welcome back!

I was up in Appleton. Castle Rock BBS started in 1993 and ran until 1998. That's when the Air Force decided I needed training for 9 months in Texas. I just never started it back up.

We were Castle Rock BBS, located in Appleton. We ran Proboard with Intermail front end. I had us hooked up with Fidonet and about 8 others at one time. It was online from 1993 until 1998.

Hook it into SIMNET, thats what I did with my POTS line, people call my number and then can choose from either MY system, or others on the network, there are three other numbers in the US linked in and one in Finland and another in Romania. kinda cool.

Well, I do still have a caller or two that, for whatever reason, prefer the modem to the telnet. However, I think a lot of folks who call in are
one-time callers, either for nostalgic purposes or to test out some old equipment... they call using a C64 or some-such.

Still I like the idea that folks can fire up an old machine and actually have

I'm working on getting my system on line. One of my walls is that I only have one analogue line comming into the house.

Another wall, is that I don't have that much unique content on my board at the moment. On my website, I had generated hurricane tracking maps for about 9 years, until my job got to be too much a job and took my personal life away from me. I'm in recovery now. I'm limiting time spent at work and I'm rebuilding the hurricane site from the ground up using new technologies. I'm looking at porting the products created on that site to Jay's Cafe' and then flipping on the dial-in line.

I have additional thoughts about using it as a information dial-in repository/communications hub in the time of disaster recovery. I live in South Eastern Louisiana and when the storms hit, generally, all that is available are phone lines.

Making it a hub, connecting it to information sources, such as HAM & Datapackets, and a generator for power, would give me all the tools to make it a information stronghold in post-disaster recovery. It's a big dream for a hobby, but I have been assembling the parts and am getting hopeful that it could be pulled off.

I agree, it is somewhat of a lofty goal for a hobby, on the surface.
The weather data is freely available through shortwave and can be
turned into images easily accessible through dial-up. The rest of the infrastructure are in place. So, really, it may be a big dream, but I
expect it to be reality as soon as I can climb a ladder to string up an
antenna to receive the weather fax through HF.

Existing in So Louisiana, as you can imagine, getting cut off from the
rest of the world because of a lack of communication immediately
following the landfall of a storm is common. I can't tell you how many
times this has happened in my life.

Receiving information from HFWeather Fax, posting it to the site, then
dialing to another BBS via analogue copper lines to exchange qwk
packets is not that difficult to imagine.

Stage 2 would be to forgo the analogue line for transmittal of
datagrams to a remote downlink. That will take infrastructure building
and potential coordination with someone outside the area. Again, not
that big of an impossibility as being former military, I have contacts
all over the globe, that could help me realize this dream.

Reality and inventions come from dreams.

    Thanks,

    Jazzy_J

Existing in So Louisiana, as you can imagine, getting cut off from the rest of the world because of a lack of communication immediately
following the landfall of a storm is common. I can't tell you how many times this has happened in my life.

I can imagine it happening but not really what it is like for more than
a few hours at a time. Some years, Louisiana seems to have a bulls-eye
    on it.

There is somewhat a viable need. What happens, when we are struct, communications and the interchange of news and information grinds to a halt. Very few people have analog telephone lines. VoIP and cell services die quickly. The only time I've had a PoT fail on me during a storm is when a tree fell on the house destroying the exterior connection on the house.

PoTs become valuable commodities in those days.

The setup I am after will address this need. More information feeds give me more options when different services are down. Redundancy of information sources are necessary to insure availability. --- You don't know what you will have the morning after.

As for the lenght of time? I've been out of power for over a month before. Although it is most common to have an outage of power for about a week to a week and a half. Broadband services are usually out for a month and longer. Cell service generally out about 2 - 4 weeks.

The communications infrastructure in South East Louisiana (SELA) is weak at best. NOLA is the end of the road for many back-bone providers. It has been this way for a while. Back in the day, Compuserve, AOL were long distance numbers to this area.

When a dial-up ISP finally opened shop, he had a system of ~30 modems that serviced a population of over 100,000. Living on the bayou, I never achieved a speed, over 28,800 kbps. That was at the end. For half a decade, you were lucky to establish a speed of 14,400.

I'm rambling. I could go on for hours. My wife has a position in the parish gov't and she hears my cries (and the cries of the industry) about the backbone, and is beating the drum. But, the backbones don't want to deal with the local gov't or deal with the industry and it is one roadblock after another. She makes 2 steps forward, gets hit back a step. Backs up, regroups and then tries again.

At the very least, she's got the players talking about it every now and again.

    Peace, Love and Popcorn!

    It sure does!
Dreams of being able to use your debit card again! Amazing how
    the phone
lines in New Orleans can blow out credit, debit, and EBT machines
    all
    over the coast of Louisiana!

I responded in another post about the infrastructure. NOLA is the endpoint for most of the backbones. Then it branches fiber to the Bayou Region. We once lost our connectivity (to the entire parish) for 2 days because a gentleman cutting the grass on Hwy 90 (the connective tissue between Houma and New Orleans) severed the Fiber along his route. I was up for 36 hours at the local hospital working with elements all over SELA. Finally, we restored connectivity and my corporate network contact forced me to go home and sleep and he wrote the report.

I continuously run into downtime issues with the trunks coming into this area. Much of the services are single-treaded. We don't have that many possibilities for redundancy. I feel for the infrastructure companies.

Still I like the idea that folks can fire up an old machine and actually have a place that they can connect to with it. :) So, I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. Only thing I worry about (knock-on-wood!) is what happens if the modem ever stops working. :o

I'm working on getting my system on line. One of my walls is that I only ha one analogue line comming into the house.

Another wall, is that I don't have that much unique content on my board at t moment. On my website, I had generated hurricane tracking maps for about 9 years, until my job got to be too much a job and took my personal life away from me. I'm in recovery now. I'm limiting time spent at work and I'm rebuilding the hurricane site from the ground up using new technologies. I' looking at porting the products created on that site to Jay's Cafe' and then flipping on the dial-in line.

I have additional thoughts about using it as a information dial-in repository/communications hub in the time of disaster recovery. I live in South Eastern Louisiana and when the storms hit, generally, all that is available are phone lines.

Making it a hub, connecting it to information sources, such as HAM & Datapackets, and a generator for power, would give me all the tools to make a information stronghold in post-disaster recovery. It's a big dream for a hobby, but I have been assembling the parts and am getting hopeful that it could be pulled off.

    Thanks,

THIS is a GREAT idea. a server you can dial into to access information when all other lines are out. I plan on actually getting another landline in addition to our Time Warner Cable service to run my Raspberry Pi BBS on. I would definitely like to see what you're setting up come to life!!! keep the landlines alive!
