I must say I am not liking the direction that Mozilla has taken FireFox
and wherever the hell Thunderbird has gone.
For FireFox this is my reasoning:
They srated with FireFox Hello (propreitary or atleast shit
intergration I could not get rid of, nonetheless it was packaged with
FireFox by default)
For Thunderbird:
Intergation of propreitary chat services. Also, why is chat part of
an e-mail client anyway.
So what have I chosen for browsing and mail then? Chrome or Chromium.
Nope, SeaMonkey.
SeaMonkey is clean and has a rather nice interface that I actually like
(an old looking interface that I find rather nice; awesome icon set).
SeaMoneky is a web-browser (so FireFox is covered there), an e-mail
client and news/feed reader (Thunderbird covered there) and has chat for
IRC; therefore covering the IRC part of the Thunderbird chat intergration.

If memory serves, it felt like an updated Netscape Communicator circa 2000.

I downloaded it today, and I am pleased. Loads faster than firefox, seems to navigate very well, and I like the built in mail, irc, and other stuff. It's great for the BBS machine. Thanks for the suggestion. I might load it on my MacBook also, but really don't have any firefox issues with the mac.

I use Opera because I enjoy the synced, very capable start page, where I can categorize my most-used pages. When I want something quick, I use xombrero or epiphany, Links2 on occassion, and elinks or lynx frequently when I only need text. Xombrero is a very quick browser with modern rendering, though I can't recall which engine they use right now, and I tend to use it 2nd to Opera when

Sorry about the above triple-quote, learning this thing still... for gopher, it
depends on your OS. In linux, I use "gopher" and "lynx" to browse the gophersphere. On DOS I use bobcat and PC Gopher (on an 8088, newer systems have
better clients.) On Windows, you can use your browser sometimes (I think firefox has a plugin) or one of several gopher clients, or even a web portal. Search for "gopher client" for your platform and you'll find something. If you
want, create an account on sdf.org, login, and use their system to browse gopher, and even create your own gopher site there for free.

I actually like that idea, and think there are probably a number of mature apps
out there that could be considered feature complete and don't need a bunch of new functionality wedged in (unless new trends require it). To me it's an anti-bloat measure.
But again, I read this maybe 2 years ago. I haven't really kept up.

I actually used Seamonkey some time back for a good stretch. I liked it a lot too, but I think I started having issues when trying to upgrade/reinstall it. I
wish I could remember the specific issues I was having, but whatever it was drove me back to just using Firefox and Thunderbird again.
But I do recommend people give it a look. The issues could have very well been
my system (or the user running it).
