• Sick of FireFox and Thunderbird? Well, there's SeaMonkey.

    From Deavmi@VERT/EWBBS to DOVE-Net.General on Sun Dec 4 17:53:32 2016
I must say I am not liking the direction that Mozilla has taken FireFox
and wherever the hell Thunderbird has gone.

For FireFox this is my reasoning:

They srated with FireFox Hello (propreitary or atleast shit intergration I could not get rid of, nonetheless it was packaged with
    FireFox by default)

    For Thunderbird:

Intergation of propreitary chat services. Also, why is chat part of an e-mail client anyway.

So what have I chosen for browsing and mail then? Chrome or Chromium.
    Nope, SeaMonkey.

SeaMonkey is clean and has a rather nice interface that I actually like
(an old looking interface that I find rather nice; awesome icon set).

SeaMoneky is a web-browser (so FireFox is covered there), an e-mail
client and news/feed reader (Thunderbird covered there) and has chat for
IRC; therefore covering the IRC part of the Thunderbird chat intergration.

This message was typed using SeaMonkey.

Infact it actually makes things easier to some users i'd assume. The
icon next to a message in the message list in Thuderbird which appears
green when a mail is unread is now a junk status icon (which confused me
at first) but then at the top in the toolbar just click the "Mark"
button. This "Mark" button defaults to marking as unread but has other uses.

    I am loving this browser.

Thank you for reminding me of SeaMonkey. I looked at it in the past, but I never got into it. Now that Firefox has gotten to be a bit buggy and Chrome/Chromium has been lacking a lot of features that I need, SeaMonkey fit the bill much niceyl for me.

I agree with the fact that it does kind of have that old Netscape Communicator suite look to it (even the SeaMonkey Modern still looks like Netscape Communicator). However, it did allow me to install add ons that I need: AdBlock Pro and DownThemAll!.

Again, thanks for the recommendation! I was not happy with Chromium nor with Firefox.

I have returned to FireFox on Windows. But on GNU/Linux I use Abrowser
which is a fork of FireFox which basically is fully open-source.

SeaMonkey is okay but it has some things built in I don't like, like the translation feature that is built in.

What would be better is if all these things became addons and the mail
client and IRC client (ChatZilla) became addons.

Also, I wish SeaMonkey had a fully open-source version.

I am glad I reminded you of a good alternative. Also if you need full
screen mode for SeaMonkey then there is a plugin for it. I forgot it's
name (but it's open-source) and you can ask the people on the mozilla
IRC network I think on how to get full screen mode to work for things
    like YouTube.

I downloaded it today, and I am pleased. Loads faster than firefox, seems to navigate very well, and I like the built in mail, irc, and other stuff. It's great for the BBS machine. Thanks for the suggestion. I might load it on my MacBook also, but really don't have any firefox issues with the mac.

I can see how it's good for BBS.

You can use it for the IRC server, you can use the mail for the BBS mail
and you can also use it for the NNTP gateway to the BBS network.

Also, the web interface of the BBS.

I use Opera because I enjoy the synced, very capable start page, where I can categorize my most-used pages. When I want something quick, I use xombrero or epiphany, Links2 on occassion, and elinks or lynx frequently when I only need text. Xombrero is a very quick browser with modern rendering, though I can't recall which engine they use right now, and I tend to use it 2nd to Opera when I need a gui. I also admit to using gopher from time to time...

I use Opera because I enjoy the synced, very capable start page, where I c

Why thank you. I update it regularly with new blog posts. I need to edit
it a tad bit to make it more complete as I have moved some stuff around
you know. I am however pleased with where it is currently.

What do you use to browse the Gopherspace?

Sorry about the above triple-quote, learning this thing still... for gopher, it depends on your OS. In linux, I use "gopher" and "lynx" to browse the gophersphere. On DOS I use bobcat and PC Gopher (on an 8088, newer systems have better clients.) On Windows, you can use your browser sometimes (I think firefox has a plugin) or one of several gopher clients, or even a web portal. Search for "gopher client" for your platform and you'll find something. If you want, create an account on sdf.org, login, and use their system to browse gopher, and even create your own gopher site there for free.

Yeah, I also use lynx. I did try Gopher (it's alright but I don't think
it does word wrapping if I am correct).

I must say I am not liking the direction that Mozilla has taken FireFox
and wherever the hell Thunderbird has gone.
I thought (and maybe things have since changed) that they basically stopped active development of Thunderbird. I thought they were only maintaining it since they've considered it 'feature complete'. That meant they were just doing security updates and bugfixes.

I actually like that idea, and think there are probably a number of mature apps out there that could be considered feature complete and don't need a bunch of new functionality wedged in (unless new trends require it). To me it's an anti-bloat measure.

But again, I read this maybe 2 years ago. I haven't really kept up.

So what have I chosen for browsing and mail then? Chrome or Chromium.
    Nope, SeaMonkey.

SeaMonkey is clean and has a rather nice interface that I actually like
(an old looking interface that I find rather nice; awesome icon set).

SeaMoneky is a web-browser (so FireFox is covered there), an e-mail
client and news/feed reader (Thunderbird covered there) and has chat for IRC; therefore covering the IRC part of the Thunderbird chat intergration.

This message was typed using SeaMonkey.

I actually used Seamonkey some time back for a good stretch. I liked it a lot too, but I think I started having issues when trying to upgrade/reinstall it. I wish I could remember the specific issues I was having, but whatever it was drove me back to just using Firefox and Thunderbird again.
But I do recommend people give it a look. The issues could have very well been my system (or the user running it).
