  • Gravity powered light

    First off I have to admit this is a plug to my little blog, that aside...

    This tech is so freaking cool! It's new, but ancient.

    It's a light that is powered by nothing but gravity, using the same technology that powers old pendulum clocks!

    Such a thing is how they mechanically store solar power. Say you have some solar power but you don't have a way to store it, like in a batter. The hope is that you have some sort of generator tho.

    The presumption is that you have enough solar power to handle all your
    daytime needs and some spare solar power to add to the storage. The spare (storage) solar power is used to turn a motor that lifts a weight up to a
    high height. Then during the night, when there is no solar power, the weight slowly falls, turns a flywheel that then turns a generator. It's the same principle.

    I had no idea that there was a way to store solar (or any power) mechanically, but now that you mention it, I could see this simple technology being combined with something like solar. Very cool.
