    Ok, this is crazy.

One of the local stores is selling pet rocks again, i'm sure they aren't "official" pet rocks,

probably just made by a lady or kid with time on thier hands, extra googley eyes and a hot glue gun locked and loaded... then again I know guys that will do anything for a buck... anyways.

just out of curiosity I looked up pet rocks, and found a 32 page instructional manual on how to take care of your pet rock, I kid you not!!!

    32 pages!?!

Again, I yiy yiy has to be said, and I now need to find a suitable wall for which to bash my head into.

In case you doubt my story (because I can barely believe it myself), here's the link:

    https://www.scribd.com/doc/252772385/The-Care-and-Training-of-Your-Pet-Rock-Man ual-by-Gary-Dahl

oops, it "split it" again, I think...

    https://www.scribd.com/doc/252772385/The-Care-and-Training-of-Your-Pet-Rock-Man

    There, that's better.

    Crazy no?

The pet rock was a novelty item, and I think people buy it because they think it's a cute idea. The 32-page manual just adds to the novelty/cute idea. I suppose if people have money they want to spend on things like that, it's their choice.

Oh dear, that manual is BRILLIANT! :)

Here's just one part from 'Training your Rock' -

    Roll Over.
"The best place to teach your PET ROCK to ROLL OVER is on the side of a hill. Place your rock on the ground at the top of a hill and give the command, ROLL OVER.
Now, let go of your rock. It's that simple."

Not to mention 'Play Dead' trick that you can teach your rock among other stuff.
I'm off to find a 'genuine pet rock' in my alley, I'm officially hooked.

God, whats wrong with people... they need rocks thrown at them.. In the age of virtual pets, people are buying rocks.. (why even have a virtual pet) why pay for a rock.. I just don't get it.. not even a nickel, much less 85 dollars... unless it's compressed carbon type of rock. even then.. only for resale..

I wonder if this started out as some con artist scheme or as a test to prove that if you put enough hype into it, people would generally go for it.

Now, virtual pets... As a parent, I can see it being used as tool to gauge how your child would take care of real pets. My 2- almost 3-year-old son has a few virtual pets on his edutainment game that he loves to play. You do have to actually bathe, feed, and give water to the pets. Interesting thing, you have to pay for the food with the tickets you earn doing each educational activity that's in the curriculum. Thinking about it, it's quite a genious way to teach a young child about real life...

I digress... As an adult... N-yeah... I don't understand getting a virtual pet. I have too many things to do anyways...

Thats how I found about the Virtual ones, my nephew plays with my phone everytime they come over and downloaded one called Pou and its pretty much as you described. before he left he asked if I would take care of it for him. make sure he did'nt die :) It's a great tool for kids. Kinda reminds me of Home Economics at school and the raw eggs.

Yeah, I noticed a few worried pet owners talking about it already. So, I've
instructed George (my pet rock) to exercise a bit more often, I issue a 'ROLL'
command via batch file every hour aaand...so far so good (knocks on wood).
