Who over here has had the longest uptime for one of the machines they own>?

Also as a seperate question, who has had the longest uptime for a machine that ran a BBS?

I'd like to start a friendly bet to see who can run their BBS for the longest without a restart #TeamKK4QBN

Define, "Up Time". ;) Windows 10 misreports Up Time, even if it is just a "shutdown"; which I really suspect that it's just hybernation with a "shutdown" label.

Honestly I don't remember offhand, as I haven't really been tracking that. But I tend to make regular backups of my BBS (or at least every so often), and usually I shut down my BBS so that it won't hold onto any files as I'm copying/compressing them to back them up (or possibly worse, modify files as the backup is in progress). So I'd say I normally don't have my BBS running longer than a week or a month or so before I do a backup.

same here.. usually once a week, or when software is upgraded, changed never can have too many backups, and in many separte machines, storage devices too.. I have learned a hard lesson from past mistakes.

I've been on customer machines that haven't been rebooted in years. I think the longest was getting close to 5 years. These are HP-Unix and/or RHEL linux machines.

My Cobalt Qube had an uptime of 440 days once, then I rebooted it for no good reason at all.

My windows computers are usually rebooted once a week or so, sometimes more often.

I don't know about BBS machines, or even computers, but I've had a fan running for about two years non-stop in my bedroom, mainly for its ambient noise that helps cancel out my tinnitis. ;-)

But, alas, I'm one of those backup freaks, so Synchronet never runs beyond seven days before a shutdown. As for the computer running it, I can get three or four months through the winter if a snow storm doesn't knock out the power. But, living in the Midwestern US means at least a handful of shutdowns during spring and summer to avoid lightning damage during thunderstorms.

ambient noise that helps cancel out my tinnitis. ;-)

Tinnitis is ringing in the ears if I am correct?

Yes, and sometimes it can be fairly bad, depending on the person and their case. There are whitenoise generators that tinnitus sufferers can wear in their ears (which look similar to hearing aids), which help with the noise.

From what I've heard, I don't think there is a cure, just ways to deal with it (such as the whitenoise generators). I've heard of cases where it can be bad enough that it can contribute to depression, and also it can cause reduced sound tolerance, making the person very sensitive to loud noises (for instance, police and ambulance sirens might bother a tinnitus sufferer).

No there is no cure and yes it caused me depression and I would get severe panic attacks which made the ringing in my ear worse.

Your right nobody can understand. (I do cause I have it). I used to get drunk and eat valiums the doctors prescribed me to cope with my Tinitus. Now I put
on some tunes or play my guitar through the head phones when the ringing gets to be too much. White noise works OK but sometimes that will aggrivate me
which makes the rining louder. I don't recommend the drinking and druggin.
That caused me more problems then just having the Tinitus. The main thing for me is to keep calm. Try not to focus on the ringing and keep busy.

That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

Here's a funny related story: there's an app I was using for tinnitus treatment on a plane ride called whist (http://whisttinnitus.com/). It helps you to find the frequency, amplitude (volume), and balance of your particular tinnitus and then play that exact sound either indefinitely or pulsing at whatever rate you like to mask it. Eventually (actually rather quickly), you stop hearing the treatment noise (and your tinnitus) at all.

So, the plane lands and I pull my ear buds out while waiting for everyone to get their luggage and the isle to clear for my turn to exit, but I notice everyone looking around my isle/area every few seconds, like "what's that sound?". It took me a minute or so to realize they could all hear my tinnitus treatment sounds (10 seconds on, 10 second off), but I couldn't hear anything. Apparently it's pretty loud too when you don't have the earbuds plugged in. Oops. :-O

Tinnitis is ringing in the ears if I am correct?

Yep. I've had it in one ear since an ear infection at six years old. Ringing in the other ear started in my late teens due to cranking a loud guitar amp during constant practicing. It really bothered me well into adulthood, hence the constant fan, but for about the last 10 years, I've actually come to realize I'd rather keep the ringing if a cure is found. Weird, I know, but I've had it so long that it would be much stranger to me to have clear hearing.

I guess that makes it all the more odd that I also need the noise of the fan. But, I do.

I have tinitis. It sux! I find white noise works best.

I've only ever used a fan or, at one place I lived that didn't have central air, a window air conditioning unit. Same principle, though: have a consistent, non-distracting ambient sound that's louder than the ringing.

As far as I know, the only thing developed has been an in-ear device that matches the perceived frequency and cancels it out.

In the past, the ringing REALLY bothered me. A couple other famous cases were Pete Townsend and William Shatner, both having once said in interviews that they considered suicide because of it. (I've never been that bothered.) I think the main thing in their cases was having it come on in adulthood. I lucked out and developed tinnitis in one ear (I have it in both, but the second ear started much later) at around six years old.

I'm so used to it at this point that I don't think I'd have it cured if a cure comes along. It's such a part of my normal perception that it would bother me more not to have it.

where it can be bad enough that it can contribute to depression, and

No there is no cure and yes it caused me depression and I would get severe panic attacks which made the ringing in my ear worse.

    that's nightfox talking

there's no way to understand it unless you have it. i have had a loud now i have it all the time.

Try not to focus on the ringing and keep busy.

do you have an idea of why you got this? were you at loud concerts? i also saw someplace that people that have tinitus have more electrical activity around those areas. so maybe our blood vessels are flowing a lot faster or synapses are firing off quicker or who knows.

i have it all the time now, i used to just have it come and go. i just learned to live with it. atleast i have better than normal hearing according to my tests.

i'm not sure what caused mine. i did see bands and go to bed with the WEEEEEE in my ears at night. but, not too often.
i have a fan running at night but i can still hear it.

i think it's a mind over matter thing to get around the problem. you just have to learn to deal with it. in my case i have no hearing loss, so it's just annoying.

for a period of time it was very loud and i was feeling crappy and
the doctors did an ekg and tests on me and i was in great health. some time later i got a super bad cold that lasted a few months and it went away after that. i got something worse than my tinitus; having a respiratory infection gave me something to cry about.

eating crushed fresh garlic cloves is a very hard thing to do. it burns.
it has to be fresh and it burns!

anyways, it worked that time. maybe i had a mild ear infection and the antibiotic properties of garlic helped it.

There are garlic supplement pills available, though it's probably much cheaper to stick with the raw garlic. It's too bad you can't use pickled cloves. Those are surprisingly tasty, especially if part of a snack vegetable mix or relish.

those pills dont do anything. you have to crush it and then a chemical reaction occurs and you ingest it. they cant be sitting around or processed.

Honestly I don't remember offhand, as I haven't really been tracking that.

Yeah, I stopped doing those e-peen comparisons over uptime when I stopped running Netware. :) 2 years, 10 months, BTW.

Phone systems were even better - My Northern Telecom systems had dual CPU and dual memory, I could upgrade the OS on one side, switch calls to it, upgrade the other side and not drop a call!

There is a volatile compound that is formed when you crush raw garlic. I can't recall off hand the name of it, it started with an "a." Because it is volatile, it's not something you'll get from anything but raw garlic. My grandfather wrote a book "The Miracle of Garlic" on the uses of garlic, and the reasons it was so beneficial. He also helped Kyolic develop their "Formula 100," which is probably your best bet if you can't handle raw.
