I doubt that I'll ever run Linux on Desktop or Laptop but as a server I love Linux.
I think some Linux distros work well for a desktop/laptop too. My personal favorite right now is Mint Linux with the Cinnamon UI. I also like OpenSUSE

I'm in love with Fedora and Debian for servers. Absolutely love it. Fedora for servers is possible too but I love it for workstations.
that's just expected for exterprise versions and MS has said
consumer versions wont have subscription fees.
But do you believe everything Microsoft says?
i dont consider them an evil corporation that lies.
it makes sense that they would charge a monthly subscription for enterprise instead of a monthly subscription for home usage.
i wouldnt say they would do the opposite of what they have stated.

I tend to be somewhat leery of Microsoft due to some of the tactics they've employed in the past. For instance, Internet Explorer didn't conform to some web standards for many years, and I have a feeling Microsoft did that
on purpose to leverage their market share. Microsoft knew the majority of consumer PCs ran Windows, so by making IE work in a non-standard way, many web developers focused on making their web sites work in IE and perhaps not so well in other web browsers. Recently, Microsoft has made improvements to
Android and iOS apps in Visual Studio. I'm still somewhat skeptical of Microsoft's plans, but time will tell.
... Microsoft has also been embracing the open-source community more, releasing versions of Visual Studio for Linux, and have even added the ability to develop Android and iOS apps in Visual Studio.

My experience with Fedora has been favorable so far. I use the KDE spin and it's been great. A few minor issues at times, but I'm actually surprised how good and stable it's been for a system designed to be
more bleeding edge and constantly upgraded(a new release is out every 6
months).
I wouldn't recommend it for a production system for the above release cycle reason, but on a desktop it's great. I run it on my laptop, but
for my desktop which I don't feel like having to do reinstalls on every
6 months, I use Centos.
The Debian based OS' seem nice too, but because I work with Redhat I've been sticking with that family at home too.

that was back in the old days, and no browsers were prefect back then. they didnt prevent a user from running their own browser. they just had it preinstalled at a certain point with windows.
now IE is one of the better browsers. and firefox has become a bloated POS memory hog and hung onto that title for many years.
what i saw when these guys had rendering issues was just code a script that tells the user to switch browsers. if that was truly a method MS used to leverage marketshare, it didnt work.

Actually, it is Visual Studio Code that is open source, not Visual Studio. However, I will admit that they are trying to make Visual Studio Code be a lot like Visual Studio.
big deal; along with Windows Subsystem for Linux where it is now possible to run ELF/POSIX binaries on Windows, and shockingly enough, SQL Server on Linux.
If you look hard enough I am pretty certain you will find other places where they "broke" or ignored standards also. IIRC, back in the day there was some standardized networking protocol that they "improved" in such a way that other machines could not easily interface with M$ ones.

I hate to say it but I agree with you on that, I am trying to get comfortabel with Opera so I can ditch chrome.
What I meant was that Microsoft has released versions of Visual Studio for Linux, not necessarily that they made Visual Studio open-source. Cool to hear
that Visual Studio Code is open-source though.

IE was still fairly bad into the mid-2000s, which IMO wasn't so much "old days" anymore. Web developers complained a lot about IE 6, which was released in 2001, and the next version of IE wasn't released until 5 years

Firefox's user interface and speed back in the day, but I agree it has become slow and bloated, and now it looks too much like Google Chrome. I had been using Google Chrome for a while due to its speed. Now I'm trying out Pale Moon, which was forked from an older Firefox codebase but is kept up to date and is fairly fast. Google Chrome still seems a bit faster though.. And one thing I do like about Chrome is each tab is its own process, so if a web site becomes unresponsive, it doesn't crsah the whole browser.
