Yes, hardware updates were fun back then. I built my first PX, an 8088
XT clone. Over the next several years, that PC was upgraded incrementally, until it ended up as a Pentium 90. All of the cards had been through a couple of upgrades as well, and I always had 4 serial ports, each on separate IRQs (for modems and other serial devices).
Even had to route IRQs by wire jumper and soldering irons at times. :)
In a way, I miss the fun of building and upgrading PCs. It's not the
same these days.

Oh man - more and more memories. :-) I had forgotten about IRQ and
having to set jumpers! :-)
I had a hand me down 8088 monochrome dual floppy my sister gave
me. I put a modem in it and used it for all five of the BBS's
in Jackson at the time.

Yeah, assigning IRQs was a real artform back then. :)

Cool. :)

And blew the minds of people that had NO CLUE what you
were talking about. :-)
Yeah - good memories for sure. :-) That machine was also my
first 'real' exposure to the Internet. The local Community
College set up a 'freenet' - you could dial into it, then
Telnet, ARCHIE, FTP - whatever. They gave you three hours a
day!
My first webpage was just text, cause I had no graphics
capability at all. Saw my own page on a 386 once when I
drove to the college. :-)
I still remember getting an email to jla4268@jacksonfreenet.org
from a guy that said I needed to add graphics to my page - LOL
