I remember using Gopher, IRC, Usenet. The web came along and having a "shell account" enabled you to use Lynx browser and the like to do WWW in text. Fun stuff.

Oh and SLIP on dialup with winsock on windows 3.1

I remember using Gopher, IRC, Usenet. The web came along and having a "shell account" enabled you to use Lynx browser and the like to do WWW in text. Fun stuff.

I didn't use a shell account very often, but I liked having one. One thing I found is that if my download speed was slow for a certain site, sometimes I'd get on my ISP shell account and download the file there (which would usually go faster), and then I'd download the file from my ISP space.

It seems funny to think that there used to be shell accounts offered with internet service. These days, I think most people wouldn't know what to do with a shell account.

With a shell account you could run all the cool IRCII scripts like LiCe.

It was pretty damn hard to run your own Linux distro back then, like say Slackware.

Around 1994/1995, the cutting-edge BBSers discovered shell accounts, usenet, MUDs, and FTP repositories in obscure countries. Trek Filk written in Esperanto, that kind of stuff.

Netcom was a shell provider - you'd dial into a *nix shell. Not sure what
    they used back then...

You'd have Elm and PINE for email, tin for news, and gopher clients. And

*nix as in Unix/Linux, or something else entirely? Sounds like they get a fair bit set up for you, especially if they provided a web space.

I have been away for around 6 months and ended up misplacing a lot of my vintage computer equipment, including my system disks for my Mac which I have always used for BBsing. I am using an emulation device on my computer called Floppy EMU as the orignal disks are gone for good. Everything appears to be working fine now that I have managed to download an operating system which is compatible with the UK keyboard I have.

Hope you are all doing well!

Another floppy substitute that is common is a Gotek. It fits in a floppy
bay, and will format a usb stick into 1000 floppy partitions. A rotary dial
is used to change disk images.

It is good to hear vintage computers being put to use.

That's a really neat looking device. I had never heard of a Gotek before. I will probably try to fix up a few spares/repairs machines I have this spring/summer and will consider that an option as it is a lot cheaper than the device I am currently using.

I had thoughts of getting one for the 486 I have so I can have a boot img.
The 486 will only boot from a drive 559megs or smaller however once in DOS you can make use of a drive partitioned into a few 2gb segments.

Using a boot disk would be fine too I guess :D

Goteks sell on amazon starting at $30 on up depending on features. Depending on the platform it is going in, it may require flashing (pc, amiga, apple.)
I haven't done the research but I heard they were originally made for an electric piana/ keyboard that took floppies to record songs or trasfer instrument data. They also have industrial applications, where a floppy
would not last long in a dusty or hot, dirty environment.

Another option you can try is finding a stand alone IDE controller with it's own BIOs configuration. You would go in your motherboard BIOS, and shut off the hard drives. When the pc boots, a prompt will pop up from the controller card asking to press a key to set up, then show which drives it detects.
That is how the SCSI drives used to connect. You might be able to get away with a CF-IDE adapter with an IDE card

Cheers, I'll look into it. I have been interested in floppy disk emulators as floppy disk drives themselves are fragile and don't tend to survive long periods in storage. I have a bunch with damaged mechanisms and broken gears that require a lot of TLC which can be time consuming.
