• DSL Versus Broadband

From Daryl Stout@VERT/TBOLT to JIMMY ANDERSON on Sun Jun 25 07:54:00 2017
    Jimmy,

One big reason - my DSL is bad enough when I'm trying
to play on roll20.net while my wife watches Netflix. :-)

To me, DSL is like a dial-up modem at 33600 baud or slower. :P
Comcast Xfinity in central Arkansas is much faster, IMO.

Bummer. But, it's still better than dial-up. However, hearing the
sound of a modem connecting is still music to a Sysop's ears. :)

not at 3am with a very loud modem that will not volume down, (either physically or through init strings).

this quiet modem I have now is music to my ears.. I do miss hearing the modem in my waking hours though.

Took my old Heyes Modem and mounted a toggle switch on side so I turn off speaker at night.
During the day I would leave it on because the BBS was up stairs and if someone paged me I could hear it.
I don't have a modem these days but I am tempted to add one since I have a spare xfinity phone line I don't use.

LOL true! All of the modems I've owned could be silenced by init strings, so I didn't have that issue.

Yes, during waking hours, modem sounds were good. :)

My fax printer worked with magic jack so I assume a $10 USB modem would as well.

Depends what codec they use, some codecs will pass modem tones undistorted, others won't.

Nope the fax modem on the printer worked like it would on a regular phoneline.

I know someone who had the fart text tone. He changed it after I "pranked" him a few times with real farts. Found it a bit hard to work out whether he actually got a text or not! :D

I have a Comcast VOIP line, and instead of using house wiring I have a cordless phone with extension phones in the house. I'd love to find a cordless phone with a line out, so you could plug a POTS device into a cordless phone and get dial tone that way. I have a MFP and an old Western Electric phone I'd love to get working again.

I use a router with an inbuilt PBX switch and cordless base station. I also have a matching handset. However, the switch has 2 POTS ports, so I could plug in a phone, modem, fax or any other POTS device. I also have the option of setting up an ATA with a POTS device attached as an extension, just need to plug that into the wired network somewhere.

On the previous router, I had several devices configured as extensions. Haven't got around to sorting that out yet. Some of the old extensions aren't needed anyway.
