    Lovely,

Had someone dialup my POTS line today at 1:13 EDT and log in as guest even though I specifically ask pots users to not use the guest account, then they stayed on the bulletins menu for a total of what 8 or 9 hours. and yes the pots line was still active when I just checked it.

guess I will need to ENFORCE the no guest policy on the pots line now. I presume there is a way to do this through flags and such.

hahaha, i guess that explains why it was busy for so long today... i
got a new phone line installed and was looking for somewhere to test it out. i think these old lines are pretty noisy, as there was a ton of delay / error correction, but it seemed to get better after dark. it was the same most places i called so i'm guessing it's on my end.

Well.. I'm not afraid to admit that my line may have a play in it too.. our utility lines are running through tree branches and everytime the wind blows hard just about it, we have brown-outs.. etc.. been trying to get the utilities out here to do something about it to no avail.

Years ago, at my apartment complex (H.U.D. subsidized housing for the disabled...I've been fully disabled for 13 years, and they keep finding
stuff wrong with me), construction crews working out here SLICED the underground cables (phone lines, etc.) like a knife through
butter...even though they were CLEARLY MARKED!!

Then, they left the holes open (they did have barriers around it, so
some poor sap wouldn't fall into it)...but it poured rain from
thunderstorms that night, and flooded the cables!! The resulting static
and line noise made voice and data calls virtually impossible!!

I no longer have dial-up on the BBS as a result, especially
    considering AT&T wanted over $50 a month for a "vanilla line"...but, I
have a Magic Jack (voice) and a Magic Jack Plus (fax) setup...each for
    $40 a year!!

The fax line has a fax modem with it, but I've got to figure out how
to turn off the volume on the voice line, as I was getting calls on it
at 3am. Right now, it "silently rings", then goes to voice mail, which
creates an audio file in my email box. If they want to talk to me,
    they'll leave voice mail.

As for my Smartphone (Android), I've put the "Call Detector" app on
it, to weed out scammers, telemarketers, etc. For $16 a year, it's worth it...especially when an incoming call from one of these idiots is shown
as "scammer, telemarketer, etc.", then is automatically blocked.
