From Daryl Stout@VERT/TBOLT to ALL on Mon Jul 3 11:25:00 2017
I may have posted this before, but I don't remember when or where.

With a new LinkSys EA7300 router, I can take advantage of practically
all the port forwarding services that SBBS offers.

But, lately with SSH, I'm getting "read failure" errors when they
connect. Is that something on my end??

I just tried sshing to your BBS, and I just got a blinking cursor. Was able to type some gibberish, but nothing happened.

I had to end up DISABLING it...because I'm going to need the port for
    it for a non-BBS application.

You seem to manage to choose brain dead routers. There is NO excuse for a new router these days not to offer a decent number of port forwards. I don't know the limits of mine, but I am forwarding a LOT more than 20 ports on IPv4. 30-40 alone for ham radio applications. The BBSs don't need port forwarding, because they're using tunneled public IPv4 addresses (and native IPv6).

I still think the old Linksys running DD-WRT is the best bet. Love that firmware.

afaik I can forward as many ports as I want to, and I believe I have a fairly crappy router (sagecomm fast 4320) I mean the router looks very smart software wise.. has many many options (some I beleive I will never even learn to operate)

But still seems kinda shotty.. good nat though.

Move it to a different port instead? SSH support is one of the sweetest parts of Synchronet! Also, if you use a different port for both SSH and telnet, you will have a much higher chance of getting people looking for your BBS, and not some IOT worm bs, or an nmap scan with default ports enabled, or or or...

I still think the old Linksys running DD-WRT is the best bet. Love that firmware.

Just picked up a WRT1200AC with the intention of using it purely as a router with no wifi, and it runs like a champ with OpenWRT. Reminds me of the power/customization that DD-WRT used to offer, just with updated hardware. I needed the new router so I could move my wifi access point (apple airport extreme) to a position where it would be logged by the span port on my switch. SecurityOnion is pretty sweet if you haven't checked it out. Full pcap and ids for free! =)

Nice. It's definitely worth looking into the alternative firmware out there. More features for free. :)

I've used it on a couple of different routers. Very versatile. Unfortunately, the last DD-WRT router I had died last year with a hardware fault. :( In addition to using it as a regular router, I had also used various other modes from access point (no Internet) to client bridge, enabling wired access to a wireless network. There is an unsecured network near here (been around at least 4 years) that I used the client bridge on when we first moved here. It took over a week to get Internet sorted (most of the time trying to find a DSL modem capable of handling the long line), and this network was helpful to at least keep email flowing.

Had a similar issue a couple of weeks ago when we switched to the new high speed network. This time, it was a screwup by the network tech (didn't check the documentation was accurate) that caused the issue, but this time around, I had enough 3G/4G devices and access to fill the gap, and we didn't need to resort to open wifi. :)
