I now set the upload flag on the guest account so it rejects all attempts for guest to upload.
The idiot that uploaded this must not realize that I am alerted to all uploads every time I log into the BBS.

I don't have a lot of files, but what I have, I'm happy for guest users to download. These days, BBSs aren't the only place one can get files, and mine have almost no incremental cost to run (a few Watts of electrical power is about it, everything else is effectively a free ride), so "giving" my files away to guests is not a problem. :)

inflict it on others.
i would just use http for that.
I don't think Synchronet uses HTTP for its file links though, only FTP..

I have just been testing without a Guest account for FTP downloads,
Yeah I need to keep my Guest account for that reason (FTP Dloads) I
just severely limit what a guest can do on the BBS, basically they can look areound, they can't post other than to sysop and on my BBS General message Base, they cant play the Door games, they can't upload period.
yeah but ftp://username:password@host.com
That's not anonymous. Someone would have to have an account on the BBS to download a file. For instance, if you wanted to share an FTP link to a file on your BBS for others to download, having the guest account enabled would allow people to download it even if they don't have an account.

you culd make that u/p combo though and just have it for downloads.. don't know if could through flags and restrictions lock it from the rest of the system.

It can be accomplished through JS, check out ecwebv4
Yeah, I've heard ecwebv4 does it.. I have ecwebv4 installed on my BBS but haven't looked in detail how it does the file links. I thought I heard ecwebv4 does its own thing to use http for files.. Not sure if it uses its own web server or something, but I doubt it's something built into Synchronet.

All I allow the Guest to do on the BBS is:
1) Read messages in Message Board 1 ONLY -- no posting allowed, except
for Feedback To Sysop.
By which time, you might as well just use a highly locked down guest user. :) Probably the only advantage of doing this is it makes it harder for the bots to crawl your file areas. :)
I let the guest basically look around and thats it, when they apply for an account I give them lvl 60 access.

for the time being, I am blocking googlebot and plan to allow just
certain folders for google bot to crawl.
Im new to synchronet, how do i set up my guest accounts to be read-only?

Why keep a guest account active when it's trivial for anyone to create a named account? The guest account allows people to anonymously download files from your BBS via FTP. It's useful if you want to easily share a file from your BBS with someone who doesn't have an account on your BBS.
of BBS's seems at odds with the anonymous nature of most FTP servers. I'd
most ftp servers dont have anonymous access. it's an option.

Many of the files I've downloaded online are from FTP links. Linux distros are one thing I can think of offhand that I remember having FTP links.. I'm sure there has been other software I've downloaded online using FTP - although many use HTTP links as well.
I prefer FTP for downloading, as it is more reliable. I have seen HTTP downloads terminate early and the browser happily report that the download is complete, which is very frustrating when you think you have the file and find it's corrupt. Never seen this with FTP - if a transfer dies, it gives an error message every time.
There's a download manager (for Windows) I've used called GetRight, which can resume transfers if they abort for some reason (I think the server has to support resuming), and it can also download a file from multiple sites at the same time to increase the downloading speed (if the file is available in multiple places). It has been quite a while since they updated GetRight, but their web site is still up.. (getright.com)

I haven't seen that very often, but I suppose it can happen.

Turns out looking into this further that this individual actually was sucessful in uploading photo.scr to all my file directories, my mistake for testing the guest account thouroghly.
But Avast anti virus software that I run on my BBS caught every instance of this file and deleted them all.
apparently this is a dangerous Trojan Worm but avast took care of it. This moron spent hours uploading to my vast library of files only to have
his handy work destroyed by anti virus software LOL.
also his ip was added to my ip.can.
and now I set the flag to dis allow uploads by the guest account.
I've had that happen on my BBS multiple times. I probably should also disallow
the guest uploading files to my BBS.. Not sure why I hadn't thought of that before.

maybe a ftp bug?Naw, I don't think most of us realized just how dangerous the Interwebs has become.

Yeah I can recall seeing that file on multiple BBSes too. Has anyone examined it? I'm curious now.

It probably would be best to just delete it, don't examine it.. I've had virus scanners say it's a virus.
