There was a good article about knife fighting on a martial arts blog a long time ago where the guy suggests you give an uncapped marker to someone, to y young child even, while you're wearing white shirt, and then you can spar an see if you can stop them before they tag you at least once.
Never tried, but I got the point. There's a KIND of civility and natural diplomacy that comes from knowing that even if you WIN the fight the scars w be permanent.

Well, I for one don't see the point in those sort of fights. If it's a matter of self defence (i.e. not defending anyone else), I subscribe to the SR-71 school of self defence - there's a better than 95% chance I can outrun any attacker. Less messy that way. However, if it's a matter of defending someone else, then things get more complicated.
