Hi, just thought I might as well make a post introducing myself. Not really going to list anything about myself here, just that I don't usually use these, but they've always sort of fascinated me. I'll try to visit often, but IRL things might make it difficult.

It also turns out that my main PC doesn't support extended ASCII, so I'm mostly going to be connecting from this Samsung Q1 Ultra I forgot I had.

I know I'll most likely be crucified for this, but it's running Windows 10. I know, it sucks, I just haven't been bothered to switch to someting more useable. The PC itself is custom-built, and I don't think I can remember most of the hardware names off the top of my head.
Anyway, I'm assuming it doesn't have extended ASCII because when I try to view the BBS on it, a lot of the fancy art doesn't display right if at all. I might just be missing something, I'll keep checking.

mtel32 was the one I was trying to think of. Those 3 are probably my favori for telnet BBS access.
When I got back into BBSing in 2007, another one I found was ZOC. It seemed work decently from what I remember, but it was shareware.
Nightfox
The thing i liked best about mtel and netrunner is they handle animated ansi well and have built in zmodem file xfers that actually work with your pc and bbs they way it used to be...
Syncterm was introduced to me long after so I already have my habits but it is equally a good terminal program.

I also really like how netrunner handles ansi but i also like synterm
also both are great clients
SyncTerm was one of the first telnet BBS terminals I used, and I stuck with it, as it does what I need. Also, it seems SyncTerm is noticeably a little faster at rendering ANSI than netrunner and mtel. I like that netrunner and metel look a little more like a traditional modem communication program though.

For me, SyncTerm is faster than the others (not slower). I don't really consider it a big issue.

I also found that Netrunner will automatically put you in RIP emulation if it gets the message from the BBS that it supports RIP. For some BBSs (like Particles), this causes problems because the Sysop didn't set up RIP on his BBS. And there was no way to disable this "feature" in Netrunner.
can you do a video comparing the two? why do you think syncterm is faster? shouldnt it atleast be the same as netrunner because they use sdl2?

I think you're getting your terminal software mixed up Dr.What. Particles BBS is an old BBS that ran on a C-64. You're probably seeing "Commodore Graphics" known as CG Mode. Syncterm supports it so maybe you called Paritcles BBS with Syncterm? Netrunner only supports Ansi screens so seeing RIP screens with it is pretty much impossible. In fact Particles is on port 6400 which Netrunner does not support either. Of course it's possible to see anything when smoking some very potent weed. ;-)
I think you're getting your terminal software mixed up Dr.What.The Sysop even mentioned that the software he is using supports RIP, but he never set up the menus, so it's kinda hard to navigate in RIP mode.

Nope. I use Linux and there are darn few programs that I can use to call BB Normally I use Syncterm just for simplicity, but I did try out Netrunner and the messages I got showed that Netrunner dectected RIP on Particles BBS.

This seems to be something different, and more recent than the cyan coloring With the cyan colored messages, I think they were just using a Synchronet co code. These messages actually have ANSI codes in them, and (at least with m reader) are screwing with the message so that the message is pretty much unreadable.. I think these ANSI codes might have some kind of cursor moveme or animation codes that are messing with how the message is displayed.

I thought SCFG already had options for stripping ANSI and other color codes in there. I was looking for that in the sub-board settings earlier; maybe I should have been looking in the QWK hub settings.
Back in the day, I also liked configuring external 3rd-party protocols (such as BiModem, Puma/MPT, etc.). I configured them both for my terminal software and my BBS so users could use them. And because they were external, they'd have to launch an external program and wouldn't display within the terminal app.. But it was cool to watch.

i bet you it was some weird videocard performance bottleneck.
BBSing for me is removing myself from the endless gourmet of the internet - I want to stay within the BBS using BBS technologies, not go off and load up my browser and go to some FTP site - only to see my bookmarks and the 'F' of FTP bring up Facebook as a URL suggestion!
I use FTP as part of an updated suite of tools. With Synchronet, I can ftp QWK packets
to
my DOSBOX, where I run an instance of MultiMail and Qedit, just like I used to use
back
in the 90s. When I'm done, I close DOSBOX and use FTP to upload the .rep packet to the

Easy to do, also you can use problem steps recorder. The long lost troubleshooting tool.
on the keyboard press the windows key (or click start, and type run)
in the run field type:
this looks like a great program. i never knew about it. i dont think
it records video.
i'm certainly going to use it next time someone tells me "it doesn't
work" ---

I'm not sure why, but it seems all of your messages lately have ANSI codes
the first few lines that show the subject, from, and to. It seems my message reader is having a hard time dealing with it, because it messess
up
the rest of the message.. Do you have ANSI codes enabled in your sub-board
ettings in SCFG?
so THAT's why everything comes out in that cruddy dark cyan and doesn't change back when writing a new message... at least not until some other code is run which resets the colors... damned annoying at times :P

I use multimail and that seems to work pretty well. .. accept for decoding what's above.
multimail if offline messaging... i'm actually attempting to use the BBS experiance unlike my past several decades of using only a sysop editor to access the message bases from outside of the BBS ;)

When I see "sysop editor", I think it's something that edits the
sysop..? Then I see you mean a message editor for the sysop. :P
