Did you even left the BBS scene thinking of never coming back ?
Why did you come back ?

I came back because of curiosity, wondering if BBSes were still around. I came across the Telnet BBS Guide, and choose to sign up for MTLGeek. Never would I have ever thought that I would use a FreeDOS VM on my cell phone, dedicated to connecting to BBSes. If I were able to tell the younger me
that I would carry a DOS machine around wherever I go, I would have been very impressed by it.

Because larger online service, like CompuServe, Delphi and stuff
available on packet switched network. Then internet
With Usenet not as active as it was, there was no real replacement for echomail on the Internet. :)
Large commercial services never resally took off in Australia. There was Viatel, but it was horrendously expensive. BBSs held sway, until the Internet took off here in the mid 1990s.

Once I discovered Synchronet in 2004, I set up a system in my garage and
set it up as a telnet BBS. Been here ever since.

I agree on that, haven't been on Usenet much lately and I guess everybody else >too. Kind of sad the state the place is.
Where does people actually talk about stuff? I don't believe it's on FaceBag, >appart the ton of share on cat video and product my friend have liked there is >little "meat" there.
Puzzling that nothing picked the slack. Just glad there is some life here :-)
Just the thing that turned me off back then I guess from BBS is that people where there for the downloads. So very little discussion and a lot of busy lines.
Well, some folks I know do just about all their communicating on facebook
or by text or something else on their phones... I call them phone zombies.
I rarely ever see them put the things down.

I left the BBS scene in 1994, when I first got on the Internet. Software selection was much better than the couple of dozen local BBSes I called, and more immediate than waiting for Walnut Creek CDs in the mail :)
you sure about that? pickings were kinda sparse and it took a lot of time to find something. a bbs with a good file area would certainly outdo the internet in 1994
I used to use BBSes for files a lot back in the 90s, but when I started to use the internet, I found that I could more easily find newer versions of the stuff I was looking for on the internet. It seemed that on a BBS, chances were a BBS wouldn't have the latest version of what I was looking for.
I came back a few years ago because I missed the scene, the Usenet isn't much fun anymore, and the Internet at large is crap.

Yes, it really feel like Usenet is dead. Sad. I wish it would have survived in a kind a syndicated form where web forum with link
themselves using it.
I guess it will swing back in some for ( real interaction ) on the internet. I do hear people getting frustrated with the quality of the exchanges on facebook and likes.

(word of mouth, lists of ftp sites, using archie and wais, etc).
As for BBSes with good file areas outdoing the internet of the time, I would tend to agree. In most cases they could cover a more diverse range of systems.
However, most of the boards I was on enforced rigid ratios, whereas I could download as much as I needed/wanted from most ftp sites.

I hear that. Kids these days don't know how good they have it, with their Googles and Bings...

It is indeed. I've toyed with the idea of subscribing to a news server with decent retention for a couple of years, one of these days I might finally give in and do it. Any personal recommendations?

I remember using Yahoo, Lycos, AltaVista, and other search engines back
in the 90s. There was also another one that combined search results
from the other search engines - SavvySearch, I believe.

But for opinions and ideas not so much :-( that was my point.
Depends on the group. Comp.misc usually has some discussion, same with
some of the computer folklore groups. Most of the groups about newservers and newsreaders are populated by self-described "kooks". It's fun to watch what is essentially a Hundred Years' Flame War.

90s is a pretty broad scope. we went from not having shit to having
shit within the 90s.
i was using archie in the early 90s. then webcrawler and altavista. not sure what order.

I still visit daily, going through Eternal September and/or Albasani. There *is* some degree of intelligent discussion, but it's the exception, not the rule. Also hard to find.

At the time Lycos was my favorite. Who knew Google was going to own the whole darn thing??!
There's a twitter account called "Riker Googling" that's a list of search strings Commmander Riker would look for.
"Holodeck streaming taking up all my subspace data"
"Clean Dilithium"
"How to escape a time loop how to escape a time loop how to escape..." "What happens in a federation shutdown"
"How to replace tricorder battery"
"tricorder slow after TRIos update"
