So lately I've been messing around with a few VM's
1st was VMware - not so straight forward on setting up and I hate to read doc's lol
Then I moved on to Oracles Virtualbox, looks slick and for the most part easy to set up.
Then I remembered that my Windows 10 Pro box comes with Hyper V and I had read some on that about a year or so ago, So I decided to try it out.
1st I set up Ubuntu 16.04 as I use Linux alot mostly for my VPS servers.
I was suprised at how easy it was to set up.
Next I set up my Windows 7 Pro and that runs pretty good as well, (no sound though).
I also setup my old XP pro, XP had quite a few issues but I will work on that some more this week end.
All in all Hyper V is a pretty nice little program.

... Ahhhhhhhh, I forget what I was going to say.

I started to look into using VMs back in late 2006-early 2007 and VMWare Player was the first hypervisor that I've used. I loved the fact that VMWare had a site where you can download VMs others have built.

Then I moved on to Oracles Virtualbox, looks slick and for the most part eas to set up.

VirtualBox became my choice for hypervisors back in mid 2012; it was fully featured and I didn't have to spend $100's just to get those features. I still use VirtualBox heavily at work, but I use Vagrant, Chocolatey, and PowerShell to manage testing environments. I do the development on real machices, but load up the developmental assemblies onto the VM to test.

I would love to switch over to Hyper-V for work, but the application suite I develop in requires to write files that I need to be source controled. At the moment, I don't know of a way to handle it with Vagrant and it wants to create Samaba shares with limited permissions (which is how I am to keep these files source controled in VirtualBox: shared folders). To be clear, this application has a "web service" that manages these files and there is a desktop app that connects to the "web service".

I wish I had a newer system - Hyper-V needs more than my old Core 2 Duo can
do. I've got an OLD version of VMWare and have been trying to move to VirtualBox, but getting my existing VMs to convert has been a pain. I may just have to blow them away and start from scratch.

Hyper-V does take in other VMs. I've tried it before, and I don't remember what exactly went wrong with the VM that I've imported from VirtualBox to Hyper-V (other than the fact that I was stuck using 1st-Ge. I believe I had to clone a virtual hard drive from VirtualBox's native format to a Virtual PC's (I'm guessing this is where Hyper-V came from) native format.

Was it VMWare Workstation or a full-blown ESX server? ESX is actually not too bad to get going, and pretty powerful.
