My partner and I, along with our friends, are heading out on our annual road trip next month. The seven of us pile into a large Ford Transit van and head out. This year our destination is Hot Springs, AR with a stop in Bentonville, AR.

We like to old-school things -- roadside park lunches, use a Road Atlas, take the side roads instead of Interstate, etc. etc. When we get to hotsprings we've rented a house for the week to call home. It's really become an annual, fun event for all of us and we love it.

Anyone have any "must see" items in the Hot Springs region?

That's the way to do it! Road side cooking, it's all about the trip.

No real suggestions, but it's a beautiful part of the country to travel.

I wonder if AAA still puts out their road guides? I took a trip from California through the Southwest about 15 years ago and we used those AAA books to plan sights to see, restaurants, hotels that offered AAA discounts, and they were great - all before the internet, and considering the areas we drove through, there probably isn't internet access out in the middle of nowhere now.

I encourage you to do it! I can't tell you how much enjoyment we all get out of this. Sure, there are moments of "Ugh, I can't take these people anymore!" but for the most part it is the time of our lives. The open road, quirky little towns, picnics in parks - just a wonderful, relaxing time. We don't worry about cell phones or Internet, just enjoy each others company!

You mean the TripTik! I remember when those came from AAA in spiral bound flip books. They still produce them, but its all digital now and you have to print it yourself. A bit of a dissapointment if you ask me -- but I still use them. Every year we purchase the newest Rand McNally Road Atlas (because, yes, there are places where there is zero cell service for hundreds of miles!), get a TripTik printed and then highlight potentially interesting things to stop and see along the way. Half the fun is planning the trip! The other half is the trip itself -- not the destination!

Makes me wonder what a road trip back in the 1950s, when they built the interstate system. Each town would be unique, no Starbucks, no McDonalds, no Dennys, no chains at all...

There was a google app called Serendipitor that would plan a roundabout route to your destination that pulled up odd landmarks along the way. It made road trips when you have time to kill interesting.

I remember my grandfather talking about taking a day trip out to Long Island, from northern New Jersey, back in the 50s and 60s. Check your spark plugs, change the oil, air up and check the tires, prepare the car for what amounts to like a 30 mile journey. Then do it all again when you get back.

I drive around 500 miles per week these days, and I can go weeks without worrying about how my oil is or whether my tread is about to detach. Yeesh.
