I have been hearing on the news that the Califirnia wildfires has claimed about 30 lives. I know we have a few people active on DOVE-Net that are from California.
I hope you all are okay out there and that the wildfire hasn't effected you out there. I was thinking about our California friends on DOVE-Net.
May you be safe.

I live out on the coast near Santa Cruz. We just got back from a trip
to Lake Tahoe, and the smoke in the air in some places is horrendous. Driving through Sacramento, the sun was an angry red ball at mid-day,
and people drove with their headlights on as a precaution. My eyes
are red and my throat scratchy from passing through. I couldn't
imagine living there now. There's a shelter in place warning in many
places now just for the smoke.
And this is *nowhere* near the fires.

I read or heard a report today which suggested that PG&E (the local utility) might be responsible for this latest blaze. They were apparently aware that their lines through the area where the fire started were sparking.

They've had a history of issues; a gas main fire in San Bruno, CA
killed 8 people, injured 58 and destroyed many homes, and a fire last
year was attributed to their power lines.
Their response has been to lobby for liability limits, running some
lame ads on TV for damage control, and some testing of their gas and electrical infrastructure.
They'll probably just shuffle money to PGE Corp, their parent company, render the company assetless and file for bankrupcy again. They did the same thing back in the early 2000s, offloading billions to the parent company before filing for bankrupcy.

I did not realize this, either, but the story also made mention that at times when the fire danger is high sometimes the power is purposefully turned off to certain areas in order to prevent the high-tension wires from causing fires?
i think it's people tossing cig butts out windows or sometimes there's a firebug creating these fires.

Thanks. California has always been a big BBSing state. Luckily, so far, I haven't heard of any boards (or sysops) being lost due to the fires that seemI know that Corona/Norco had issues several months ago, but hopefully
to be increasing each year in furosity and frequency. :-(
Im from a part that not likely will get burned, but it always makes me think about buying a fire resistant box so i can put my birth
certificate and other critical items.

Good idea, and you should do that now. Waiting to get one until there's
a fire is..... well, you know.
A quality safe would be a lot better than a "fire resistant box".
i prefer to live in an area that isnt on fire every year

You'll probably still deal with something wherever you live. In the US, depending on where you live, you could deal with fires, earthquakes, potential volcanoes erupting, icy cold winters, tornadoes, hurricanes, muggy hot/humid summers, etc..

I seem to recall you live in the upper midwest, Wisconsin or around there? It can get fairly cold up there, but to each their own.
Isn't that the truth: there is, really, no place to go that isn't going to have some natueal disaster of some kind.

There was a big fire in the Columbia Reiver Gorge east of Portland, OR last year (which included damage to trees in public parks, among other things), a they said the fire was started by a teenager who threw a firework into the forest. He was sentenced with 5 years of probation and must pay a $36 milli fine. While I agree he should be sentenced with something, I'm not sure whe the average teenager is going to get that much money over their lifetime. M people never have that much money.
