I have a family of skunks who have recently taken up accomodations in my basement. The bottom floor of our house reeked so badly that we all slept upstairs.
They're sleeping peacefully down there now, I figured I'd wait until they go out for the night to put a work lamp down there and see if that encourages them to go elsewhere tomorrow.
Seriously though, I'm wondering how they got inside the house? If there's an open air vent to the basement or something, it might be good to put a screen in there or something.

I put a 100W light bulb in one part of the basement. There's another bulb, but it's too close for comfort to the sleeping pests. I'm checking back occasionally.

Man alive... I'm sorry to hear that you've got a skunk infestation. I hope you get rid of them easily.
maybe not have a hole in your house? :D

I know this isn't the same thing, but I used to have a garden. I had a
family of skunks who ate my veggies. I sprinkled cyan pepper all around
they would walk through it, lick their feet to clean them and go nuts
they never came back.

i had a possum go into my garage. i couldnt get it to leave. i roped it around the neck and couldnt get the rope off so there i was walking a possum like a dog. evntually i got the rope off. they are very peaceful animals, like skunks.
Well, it turns out that what I thought was a litter of skunks was one big skunk which had gotten in a fight with a raccoon, most likely. The spray a couple of days ago must have been the big fight. He was apparently wounded and died under my house some time yesterday, which was the Second, Larger Stink.
I called around this morning to pest control places looking for disposal, and was quoted $195+ for the service. Went downstairs to confirm, and the skunk was gone. Apparently the raccoon came back and dragged him out, I found a line of fur leading to a broken foundation vent.
I shoved steel wool into a smaller hole, replaced the vent, aired out the house all day and I think we're back to normal now.

People around here are making possum dens - they can attract and eat thousands of ticks a day! All you need to do is put half a pot in the ground and dig under it, and they'll find it sooner or later.

Not sure I'd want a possum den in my back yard... Especially not good
if you have small dogs or a cat as a pet.

The adults have big-ass teeth, though... I'd not want to encounter one that was upset.
Tomato juice time?

Well, because either the possum is gonna hurt the pets, or
vice-versa. Either way, not good.

Laugh, that would have been a sight to see. I'd have made a point of
walking past the nosy neighbour's more then once.
skunks are actually real nice animals and dont spray unless attacked.so what do skunks do for mankind that makes us appreciate them, like how some snakes eat rodents, etc. What do they do that would make me want to keep
they only live a few years, too.

a skunk near the front door of my house, besides keeping the Jahova Witnesses away? That and perhaps the mailman, if she's bearing bills?

Dealt with a lot of them. Generally, they just want to be not around you. Had a few that were sociable. One liked being pet, but then he lived on a college campus and was used to the kids feeding him so he was pretty tame. But generally, they're harmless.
