I just want to say that I'm gratefull for all people who are active here. Being busy with retro gaming and computers I also decided to setup a BBS again. Oh man what is it different than back in the days. I miss the massive users logons who also chat to sysop. I'm also not that active on the system than in those days.

What could or should I do to make the BBS more usefull to users?

The BBS deletes automatically users that dont return resulting now in no users anymore in my BBS... feels lonely.

Maybe open it up via website? But I'm woried for attacks/exploits.

I'm gratefull because you all help eachother and me. It is like the Amiga community. So many ppl help each other. I like it.

Yeah, it's not exactly the same as back in the day, but it gives a lot of the same feel though.

I wouldn't really worry about attcks via the web. A web site might actually help. One thing I think the web site can be useful for is installing fTelnet, which is a web-based ANSI BBS telnet client for your BBS. That can be useful for people who don't (yet) have an ANSI telnet client installed on their BBS.

What I do is just put stuff on my BBS's that I enjoyed back in the day.
at one time I had like 6 or 7 sharware discs but I pulled those off my system in favor of current useful files for the most part.
BBS games back in the day were fun so I have a bunch of those to play.
a good multi BBS message base like Dove-net is also great.
Most BBSes only get a few regular callers these day's but it's still allot of fun.

Thanks Nightfox. I indeed installed ecwebv4 for this reason... it is working. Only think how to do the portmapping. 4077 to 80 on the BBS machine but how to do the SSL/secure port.

I forwarded 23 to my BBS machine but when I click Connect via telnet locally it works but via internet it doesn't.

In that case though, you'd end up with a lot of unused accounts, which can inflate your stats a bit and make it look like you have more active users than you actually do. Also, sometimes people might come back and forget their password and end up creating another account, which inflates your user stats even further..

Which sounds good, though. It's the Facebook model! (10 billion users and growing!) ;-)

Yeah decided not to use it... I have to let go... in my old BBS era old/obsolete users were purged and I was fine with it... there are not that much users, that is the reality. But at least we are here :)

If you want "traffic" you're better off setting up a Website. Even then, get"ing "users" is difficult. Running a BBS is for your own enjoyment. Most BBS users are SysOps themselves. The lack of BBS software also makes it very hard to make your BBS unique. Unless you're programmer and can modify the source code easily, you're in for a jounrney. There really isn't much a BBS can offer that can't be found elsewhere on the internet. I'm a "hacker". That means I "hack" at the code to make it do what I want. It's a drawn out process of trial and error. I break it, then fix it, break it, then fix it. That said there's nothing more rewarding when it works! Nobody else will ever see what I did, other then me.
That's just my opinion ......I could wrong ;-)

There aren't many modern BBS packages that are currently in development, that's true. Synchronet and Mystic are 2 that I know of. EleBBS is another I know that supports modern protocols such as telnet, but I'm not sure it's actively being developed. However, I'm pretty sure you can still use old DOS BBS packages and get something set up so they'll accept calls via telnet.

Also, even though there aren't many modern BBS packages these days, you can still customize them to make them look fairly unique, with enough effort. Synchronet lets you customize many of its text strings, and you can also write custom modules in JavaScript & Baja for Synchronet to do custom things. You can also modify the lines in text.dat to run a JavaScript or Baja module instead of displaying plain text. So with enough work, I think you could make a Synchronet BBS look and behave any way you want.

It's nice that Synchronet is open-source, but if you want to modify its source code to customize it for your needs, then you'd need to merge in your changes every time you update to a new version of Synchronet, which would be a hassle..

I ran PCBoard from about 1992-1997, I actually lived a few miles from Clark Development co.
I bought directly from Fred and the gang.
I several years ago gave my PCBoard and manuals to the thrift store.
    I now run a Synchronet BBS - outwestbbs.com:23 -
    and a Mystic BBS on a raspberry PI 3 - razzpie.ddns.net -
