Honestly, I don't think many internet users these days even know what a BBS is,
    and most probably wouldn't care.
I remember when Dialup became more popular around 1997 and i tried to call my 1996
era user list to come back and many did not want to go back.

Dialup became more popular in 1997? Compared to what? There weren't many alternatives to dialup at the time.

Speaking of Dialup I didn't have as much connectivity problems as I have with wifi and broadband. Even when the power went out I still could get online. That is until the laptop battery died. I wonder if people would be more interested in the BBS if they couldn't logon to facebook?

Thanks to the foresight and technology of Ma Bell. Phone lines were/are powered from the Central Office (CO). 50-60 volts DC always coming down that line, more when it was ringing. Designed to withstand natural disasters to keep communications alive.

I miss the technology of Ma Bell.

Compared to just visiting your lineup of 25-60 bbses on your dialing directory.

BBSing was sort of a magical cross-roads of time, people and
circumstance back in the 90s, I can see how people wouldn't want to be disappointed trying to re-create it once they'd moved on.

That's probably true. Telnet BBSes bring back a lot of the nostalgia,
but it's still not quite the same experience as dialing up over a phone line. I think what makes a difference is these days, anyone can connect
to a telnet BBS anywhere, and there are a lot fewer BBSes these days
    than there used to be.

Agreed - and now with telnet there is no more long distance to worry
about, so ANY BBS can be your HOME BBS. Back in the day, I had about 4
I could call for a local phone call. One of them was the first in the
area, but another one became the HOME one because they had more
    echonets than the others.

None of them had FIDO, so I didn't know what that was for a LONG
time. There was a board that was a long distance call for me that
had it, so I didn't know aobut it of course.

I think part of the thing that made BBSes fun back in the day was the circumstance and creativity it took to make it happen. Home computers
had become a new thing, land phone lines were a common way to call
people, and someone had the idea of making a modem to allow computers
to communicate with each other over phone lines. Then someone (was
Ward Christiansen the first?) had the idea of making a BBS, and the
    scene started from there.

Exactly! There was a certain charm to it that is not there today. Same
with geocaching and having to download the coordinates then upload them
to a handheld device. I had to make my own cable for that. :-) Or
punch them in by hand. Now my iPhone has the 'app' so I can geocache
anywhere and anytime. Convenient, yes, but no 'charm.'

I've also become a HAM ticket holder in the last few years. I wasn't
around back in the day, but I can see where the charm used to be for
that too. Now I have a guy in another town wanting to try echonet.
We have been using Facebook to try and set up a time to connect for
him to see it in action. I would be using my laptop or iPhone, and
I think he's using his smart phone as well. We could just call each
other or even video chat, so why do we even bother? LOL For the
    novelty of it...

This made me laugh because within the past two weeks I've purchased a used Vic-20, got a vicModem for it, tape recorder, and a bunch of modules/cassettes... One of the cassettes was the original VicTerm.

    This sounds super fun.

I'm embarking on my own little journey into C64 nostalgia. I have the
C64 and a couple of 1541 drives. Currently trying to just get a video signal out to a TV. I have the 8-pin DIN to RCA cable, which is plugged into an RCA/S-Video to HDMI converter box. Currently just get the
default output from the box to screen but no signal from the computer.

    The troubleshooting begins! :)
