• Anyone used usenet lately?

    From Tracker1@VERT/TRN to DOVE-Net.General on Sat Mar 28 12:16:36 2020
Setup thunderbird against eternal-september to check out the alt.bbs.*
and a couple other groups lately... seems like other than synchronet and mystic, it's all spam...

While not entirely surprising, somewhat disappointing.

Yes, it's disappointing, but been that way for years now. I used
to use Usenet a lot, and still do some, but it's dropped off
dramatically. I think some of the "binaries" groups are still
active, but I don't use them myself.

And you're welcome to suggest a better resource (free) for text usenet
    groups.

I had a soft spot for the ba.* hierarchy, alt.bbs, and comp.dcom - but
haven't read a post there in a while. It might be time to disconnect usenet from my BBS. I think the only group I use now is alt.bbs.ads.

you're not going to get anything good that's free.
there's one you buy a few gigs and you just use it for text and it lasts for a long long time.

Yeah, I haven't ever added usenet to the BBS because I can see no
reason to do so. Just another potential source of
    spam/dupes/garbage, and who needs that?

Heh, I have access to a friends media server that pulls TV/Movies off newsgroups exclusively. The advantage is the ISPs/feds don't have bots patrolling Newsgroups, just Bittorrent. Most people that are "savoy" know to stay off bittorrent, it's hella risky, but newsgroups are like first to get files, often times extremely fast (like gigabyte speeds), and rarely monitored or tracable. Of course you have to pay for a feed like Giganews, but for the cost it really is the way to go if you're "serious".
