Yes, it's disappointing, but been that way for years now. I used
to use Usenet a lot, and still do some, but it's dropped off
dramatically. I think some of the "binaries" groups are still
active, but I don't use them myself.
One quite fine nntp feed is the one from grc.com (Security Now). There are very
intelligent and knowledgible folks sharing info and helping others there. I've
learned about some fine programs and hardware reading that group.
Basically, but if you know what you're looking for sometimes you can
find some good stuff :
rec.arts.drwho comp.infosystems.gopher
comp.sys.cbm
Are quite active still...

Good shout, although mine doesn't carry the alt.comp.os.windows group,
it does carry the ones for Win XP, 8, and 10 which are equally as good
