She is relunctant to update the OS because it slows things down.
Regarding slowing things down, is there room to add more ram?
Depends on the model of MacBook. I don't think you've been able to upgrade your own RAM since about 2012 or so. It's all soldered on now-a-days.
I have 8GB in my 2015 MacBook Pro and that's all it'll ever have. At least I can still upgrade the SSD in this model. I think newer models now have a soldered on SSD as well.
