Depends on the model of MacBook. I don't think you've been able to upgrade your own RAM since about 2012 or so. It's all soldered on now-a-days.

I have 8GB in my 2015 MacBook Pro and that's all it'll ever have. At least I can still upgrade the SSD in this model. I think newer models now have a soldered on SSD as well.

Same here with my 27" iMac, upgraded the ram myself ( easy there is the
slot behind ) and replaced the drive when it died a years ago ( I'm hard
on drives ).

Buy yeah with theirs laptop drives are soldered on mostly because of the
T2 chip, the ssd is more like just NAND chips soldered on the
motherboard than an actual drive, but it does give it crazy read and
write speed. Around 2000 MB/s both in read and write time. It might not
be replaceable but it does what it does good.

Myself I'm still a desktop guy. I rather remote desktop to a more
powerful machine trough something portable than carry that hardware around
