It's handy that Windows Explorer supports zip files natively, but I've never really liked that it doesn't let you specify compression options when adding files to a zip file. Since I don't know what level of compression it's using, I've often tended to use a 3rd-party utility to create zip files (these days, 7-zip since it's free and supports zip files, though I do have an old registration for WinRAR).

Ah.. but you haven't seen how WinRAR does it, better. ;)

Sure, explorer will show the contents just fine. It will even let you take
a peek in a subfolder. But when it comes to simply looking at a document file (that it identifies with an associated icon to indicate that it would use Notepad to view it, for example) the viewer does a poor job handling files without CRs. Instead the file is just one big wrapped mess. To
read it properly, the file needs to be extracted.

But WinRAR handles both *nix type text files and dos text files equally
well.

Another thing it can do is search for strings in text files in an archive. Infact, it can do a search with a group of .ZIP files.

yeah winrar and rar is very robust.

Mine only does RAR, RAR4 or ZIP.

oh i think that was older versions.
now it just HANDLES most formats.
