I drove a Rabbit Diesel in college, loved that car, drove it into the
ground after 300K miles. Diesel was always easy to find along the
highway, and back then it was cheaper than unleaded!

Now, they price diesel higher than gasoline, and new diesels need an
additive mandated to clean the emissions.

Before VW self-destructed, I thought they could release a diesel
hybrid car - convert it to buidiesel and you'd have a car that would
appeal to the most righteous of all alternative car buyers.

Price margins are pretty tight in the US car market. A Toyota diesel automotive costs $1500-$2500 more than it's gas drinking sister, and
companies that produce diesel cars internationally have had poor results with buyers getting over that slight price increase. Tack that on to a hybrid,
and they would have a small group of interested buyers

I've heard of Toyota diesels, but I haven't actaully seen any of them in the US. I imagine that could be due to the price difference, as you said, but I wonder if they also have trouble meeting exhaust emissions requirements in the US.

Yeah, but make it run on biodiesel, and every Kombucha-drinking,
whole-foods shopping, summer scarf and sandal-wearing, hemp clothing
hipster with a jute shopping bag, yerba mate gourd and man bun will
pay top dollar to be more earth friendly than you - and use every
opportunity to remind you of that!

If Toyota made them for sale in the US, they have to be all state legal. The price offset is part diesel and the other part is emissions. That's what pushes the price up to $2500 over a gas model.

Bio-diesel runs just fine in diesels. OEM's don't recommend it because of
the massive variation in quality coming from diesel co-ops and home brewers. It's like how firearms manufacturers do not warrant hand loaded ammuntion. A hand loader can make custom loads which exceed manufacturing standards, o
rthey can be sloppy and turn your gun into a grenade.

For bio-diesel to be made competitively, it is normally made from recycled vegetable oil from fast food places. All the crud from french fries and onion
rings and hushpuppies must be filtered out, as well as attempting to extract all other fats that would not convert over in the reaction process. Adding stabilization chemicals to keep microbes from ruining your shelf life also complicates using bio diesel unless it is used immediately.
