Basic cell service is cheaper than keeping a land line with long
distace service. A Straight Talk home phone connect box is $15USD a
month.
If I didn't live in a place with horrible cell coverage, I'd be all
over something like that.
Their home connect service is through Verizon's network, which was spotty uy until a few months ago they switched over to LTE voice (and newer hardware )

I think this is what some cellphone-at-home holdouts are not
realizing. From past experience, they may have had poor coverage
due to being limited to 2G or similar. But switching to a phone
that support 3G or better can make a big difference.
Myself, I was with Rogers and their mobile solution with USB
"stick" for many years. Apparently that was just HPSE, 2G or
less. I had to find the sweet-spot by a window to get the best
signal. I'd put the USB device on a 12' extension and hang it
over a curtain rod. That way I could at least move back from
sitting directly by the window.
But recently, I switched to using an old Blackberry Q10 that
supports newer tech (LTE) and operates as my wifi mobile hotspot.
Switching to a new service that supports 3G/LTE or better, the
mobile experience is vastly improved. I can be practically
anywhere in the house and the signal is good.
Maybe some people just think that since they've tried a cellphone
in the past it won't work better today.

A friend that lives 2 miles to the north of me went throught the ATT
fixed wireless (available to the north of me) and a tech came out and
set up a wifi router that took a SIM card. It was set up where it had good reception and had an external cell antenna.
