Now that the populace is inculcated to believe that humans are icky disgusting biological creatures spreading germs everywhere, there is a market - and willing guinea pigs.

I had a couple visit my shop some time ago. The wife had no problem venturing in, but the husband said (out loud to make sure I heard it) "he's not wearing a mask; he's breathing on everything."

Delays in creating vaccines, as with anything else, are affected by cash flow for research
and development. Nobody is going to go out of their way to drop funds on research
they can't make a bank off of.

This also doesn't factor in that there has already been decades of work on coronaviruses
already, COVID-19 is just a mere arsehole member of the coronavirus family.

And before we start whatabouting cancer and AIDS, those are another kettle of fish in
terms of what they are.

Probably because there are so many variations of the common cold. Granted, I believe the COVID-19 is in the same family of virii as the flu and the common cold.

i was so sick when i was a kid my medical records were like 2 phone books when they pulled it for the marines.

i do not get the cold or flu. not since age 18. i got a wicked cold once but i think that was some canadian one where you are sick for 60+ days.

so i am essentially innoculated for my region of midwest usa i believe. i truly do not get sick ever unless it's eating some garbage food.

The "common cold" is actually caused by a number of virus. Rhinoviruses are a common cause, but there are some coronaviruses that cause colds too, so we're not dealing with one virus, but multitudes that cause the same symptoms, which means the vaccine would need multiple components, and it may need to be updated, like the flu vaccine.

Anyway, this is a _much_ bigger job with lower returns (not as many lives to save, since colds are much less likely to be fatal), and the risk profile would either be the same or a bit higher, compared to other vaccines (normally, vaccine risks are very low, but non zero).

To answer both questions :

There is no money in making people never get sick, versus treating side effects. But ya, there really is no way to make a human immune system work in a uniform way with every strain of virus. If we could cure the common cold than curing HIV would be a walk in the park. To be blunt honest the shot for COVID-19 is a placebo. The shot works for just one strain which has pretty much been long gone now and mutated to something else. The order of nature is that it's actually not good for the virus to kill it's host. Pandemics are caused by a bad mutated strain that actually kill the host. It's why they are rare, they hit hard and quick and after a year or so fade away. If the virus can't spread itself because it killed it's host than that strain quickly gets removed by natural selection.
