I only operate "internet radio", due to "antenna prohibitions" at the
QTH. Many of the residents (either elderly or disabled) have medical
devices that could be negatively affected by RFI, and the law of
entropy...not to mention that they do inspections out here, and one
can't have antennas or coaxial cable.

Please Post some of your nets as well.. I also like to do dstar stuff..

You can get a list of any or all of these files:

    1) Selected D-Star Nets
    2) Selected D-Rats Nets
    3) Getting Started In D-Star and D-Rats

by emailing me at wx1der at gmail dot com -- and asking for those
files. They are all in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. I started the first 2,
because several nets at www.dstarinfo.com had out of date information.

The nets I run each week are noted below, with notes. Also, for the
net times, they are the same year round, but PT is the same as MST when
the rest of the U.S. is on Daylight Savings Time.

    ***

    * Southeast US D-Star Weather Net, Sunday, 9pm ET/8pm CT/7pm MT/6pm PT Reflector 4A. If Reflector 4A is unusuable, the net is on Reflector 30A.

We take checkins from the southeast states of Alabama, Arkansas,
Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South
Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas first...then open it up to everybody. 30
minutes prior to the start of the net, D-Rats checkins from anywhere are
taken at sewx.ratflector.com -- those are temporarily suspended once the
net starts, but resumed after the advisories and announcements, and
taken until the net is closed.

    * Arklatex D-Star Net, Tuesday, 8:30pm ET/7:30pm CT/6:30pm MT/5:30pm PT Reflector 48 B.

Early checkins start 30 minutes prior to the start of the net...taken
both on Reflector 48 B, and in the Arklatex D-Star Group on Facebook.

    * C.E.R.T. Net, Thursday, 9:30pm ET/8:30pm CT/7:30pm MT/6:30pm PT
    Reflector 58A.

For the C.E.R.T. Net (Community Emergency Response Team), I'm usually
Net Control on the first Thursday and backup every other Thursday. One
does not have to be a C.E.R.T. member to check into the net.

    * New Mexico D-Star Net, Thursday, 10pm ET/9pm CT/8pm MT/7pm PT
    Reflector 55A.

For the New Mexico D-Star Net, I'm usually Net Control on the second
Thursday, but sometimes have to swap with other Net Controls on the
other Thursdays. There's usually a different net control each week.
Checkins are also taken on D-Rats at ae5he.ratflector.com

    * D-Star Trains And Railroads Net, Friday, 8pm ET/7pm CT/6pm MT/5pm PT Reflector 26A.

We discuss anything and everything about trains and railroading. You
don't have to be a current or former railroad employee to checkin...just
a railfan who loves trains. It is done in honor of its predecessor that
ran on RF and Echolink in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area, for over 8
years...and in loving memory of my late uncle, K3VRM, who gave me my
love of ham radio and trains. He was the only other ham radio operator
in my family, and the youngest engineer ever hired on by the Penn
Central Railroad. First time checkins who provide an email to me (at the address noted earlier in this post), will receive a commemorative
certificate, designed by Paul, K9PTF (who also does a Railroad Trivia
Question each week). The certificate is in Adobe Acrobat PDF format.

Brandmeister? never heard of it, but thats because I have'nt really messed with DMR or anything like that.. I usually just do simplex and 2m/70cm 1.25m repeater.

I have'nt been that much into ham lately now that RC season is coming up, getting my lipos out, brushing off the ol radio and checking center of gravity on planes, and re calibrating the multirotors to go flying.. cant wait until the weather gets better.. its either been way to windy, raining, or too cold.. (cold I could deal with but choose not to the older I get).

Brandmeister? never heard of it, but thats because I have'nt really messed with DMR or anything like that.. I usually just do simplex and 2m/70cm 1.25m repeater.

There are a few different DMR networks (DMR-MARC, DMR+) and this is one of them. I haven't read up on the differences in a while, but IIRC Brandmeister is much friendlier toward experimentation, whereas the others are fussy about what software and equipment should be used with their network.

I have'nt been that much into ham lately now that RC season is coming up,

Haven't done much ham stuff myself until recently, mostly because I didn't have time to put antennas up last year before the weather turned. Turning my attention back to it now that spring is arriving. Also looking forward to Hamvention next month, which is always a good time.

Well not quite, I was going to learn it and take the test but just never got past some of my trouble with it. Plus the first time I had thought about it was back when you had to know code and be able to do a certain number of words per minute that is what kept me from it then as I just could not hear it correctly to be able to get it. So this is one sysop that will most likely not ever be a ham operator.

There are a few different DMR networks (DMR-MARC, DMR+) and this is one
of them. I haven't read up on the differences in a while, but IIRC Brandmeister is much friendlier toward experimentation, whereas the
others are fussy about what software and equipment should be used with their network.

I know DMR-MARC are very strict - their emphasis is on building a reliable network. Brandmeister are open to experimentation. I don't know a lot about DMR+, so can't comment there. There are limited links between the networks.

I have'nt been that much into ham lately now that RC season is coming up,

Haven't done much ham stuff myself until recently, mostly because I
didn't have time to put antennas up last year before the weather
turned. Turning my attention back to it now that spring is arriving.
Also looking forward to Hamvention next month, which is always a good time.

I haven't had a lot of time to play ham radio. I've not long come off my summer sporting season, and have been heavily involved in community groups. But I did take part in a communication support exercise for the local marathon with the radio club here. In previous years I actually competed in the Ekiden relay, running a shorter leg. :)

So this is one sysop that will most likely not ever be M>ham operator.

The FCC got rid of the Morse Code requirement in 2007. Now, you can
learn it and use it, but you don't have to prove that you know it.

The funniest example I heard was where 4 ol' boys sitting around a
restaurant table in Annapolis, Maryland...telling each other dirty jokes
in Morse Code (CW). This drop dead, gorgeous, curvaceous, female walked
up to them, and admonished "You boys better watch your language. I teach
CW at the Naval Academy across the street!!", and walked out. They were
    as red as tomatoes!! <G>

I myself used HamTestOnline (www.hamradiolicenseexam.com). While fee
based ($25 for the Technician exam), they offer a money back guarantee.
I studied 2 hours a day for 2 weeks, and went from Technician to General
in 14 days, and General to Amateur Extra 13 days later. It was the BEST
MONEY I EVER SPENT in ham radio.

Yet, all you need to do to get on the air is pass the Technician Class exam...covering rules, regulations, frequencies, propagation, RF safety,
and basic electronic theory. If you take 10 hours of study over 2 weeks
for the Technician exam, using HamTestOnline, you can pass it. They not
only cover the questions, but they also explain the concepts...so, you
are actually learning something, and not just memorizing answers.

While I'm an Amateur Extra Class operator, I had to be, to give and
grade the license exams...when I'm on the air, I operate exclusively in
the Technician privileges, as I enjoy them.

    Tim,

Take another stab at it now that code hs been dropped, at least get in the do K>with tech, then upgrade (I need to) I truthfully did'nt think I would have an K>chance in hell at getting my ticket, but the study paid off.

I was the same way. It was like taking a test back in elementary
school ("Well, here comes another F"!! <G>).

But, I would've stayed a Technician...had it not been for at a local
hamfest several years ago, the Volunteer Examiners (VE's) (local hams
who do the testing now), were "begging and pleading for VE's"). So,
that's what encouraged me to upgrade.

However, while I'm an Amateur Extra, that's mainly to be a VE Team
Leader. When I'm on the air, I am exclusively in the Technician Class privileges, as I enjoy them. In fact, on D-Rats for some nets, we really

Hmm, OK, doesn't seem to happen so much here. :P With me it's often sport, but not about watching it, but _doing_. :D That came in handy on Sunday, when we were doing comms for the local marathon. There were a lot of basic questions that I already knew the answer to, because not only have I done a heap of similar organised runs, but I have run a leg of the Ekiden relay at the same event the previous 2 years, with our team winning both years! So I knew how the event worked and could easily identify who was doing what as they came past - and reported the right information back to Net Control. :) Only reason I didn't run this year was our club decided not to enter a team, so I figured let's play radios instead. :)

I've kept up on the rules and regulations...especially in relation to
the ham radio license exams, with being a VE Team Leader. This way, I
can give prospective and current licensees "the low-down" on the license structure, how one can upgrade, or reinstate their license. I've been a
VE for nearly 11 years now, and it has been the most rewarding thing
I've ever done in ham radio.

I've also been doing traffic nets ever since I first got licensed
    nearly 27 years ago.

So, in both cases, I *SHOULD* know what I'm doing. However, I might
need "a blind ham to help me out of a hamfest parking lot" -- that's a
running joke with me from an incident several years ago before I had
successful cataract surgery. I may have posted the details before, but
    if I haven't let me know. I don't mind re-telling it...because if you

Not quite, but there are several of us now. If enough of us were on DMR (Brandmeister) it might be fun to set up a talkgroup and do a net.

That would be! Cool. Who wants to? Maybe on 3100. Nationwide... Love DMR. I got a shark it does 3 Dstar, DMR, Yaesue Fussion... All though I can hit a repeather from here. With my MD-380 I have to use an apdapter and my tower.. with my hotspot I can be anywhere mobile in the house..

Here is a Topic.. People with MD380's did you put custom firmware or leave it stock? I love some of the mods.. even though it voided the warrenty I still did it anyway.

was back when you had to know code and be able to do a certain number of words per minute that is what kept me from it then as I just could not hear it correctly to be able to get it.

I started my interest at 12. I'm 51 I too could not get the code.. I have been trying but loose interest quickly. I have a ticket now for over 10 years. Really enjoyed general class test.. But can't grasp extra.. I learned mine waiting at the pipeline to load everyday. It is never too late... Try HamTest Online. I was on panel that signed people that passed the test.. There was a 8 year old that passed in one of our test sessions.

In fact, on D-Rats for some nets, we really
    "cut up". <G>

I first messed with Drats when I got my DStar.. Fill me in on this net...
I've been having problems with 1C.. my callsign got mucked up in the registration system.. I can get into the AZ reflector pretty good..

Let me answer the registration process first.

Go to www.dstarinfo.com and look for the D-Star Registration Link. You
can check on your status, and register in the system if you're not
already. It's much easier than going through an individual system...like
I had to do ...and I registered through the W4LET system in Memphis.

Second, they've had a lot of problems with Reflector 1 at times. I
know that the Illinois D-Star Net is on REF 1B on Wednesday at 9pm
Central Time -- Milt, K9QZI, is usually the Net Control. Also, the International D-Star Net is on REF 1C at 7pm on Sunday. That is the
oldest net in D-Star, and some nights, they can have 150 checkins from
all over the world, and it can least 5 hours, if not longer.

Third, if you want a list of D-Star and D-Rats Net files, or a guide
in getting started in D-Star and D-Rats, email me at wx1der at gmail dot
com -- and I will get them to you. All require the Adobe Acrobat Reader
to view. I started the files, as a lot of the nets at www.dstarinfo.com
had out of date information. A few of the D-Star Nets also do checkins
via D-Rats...but that's more the exception than the rule.

    Tony,

Dirty old hams (and Sysops) need love, too. <G>

    2. No point running, you're toast. :P

Then pass the eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, biscuits, gravy, and
    butter...those are good breakfast items.

Backside is looking good...although it has a crack in it, that has always been there. <BG>

Haha, somehow I think you're overselling yourself. :P

Those of us having "tiny hineys" don't have much "padding" for some of
these "chairs"...the designers obviously had no thought for comfort in
    mind.

When I went to the Huntsville, Alabama hamfest a few years ago, the combination of the hard metal seats in the bus station, and the very uncomfortable chairs at the hamfest, made me feel like I had undergone
"a continuous ass whuppin'". Add to that all the walking involved, and
while I didn't get short of breath (I go to see a cardiologist next
week...and not the one doing the "get well cards" <G>)...it exhausted
me. I had my walker with me, and I'm glad I had it.

Yet, I see some people...especially females...who "look like they were
melted and poured" into their jeans, slacks, etc. I'd think if they
farted, or turned a certain way, it'd split right down the middle of the
    butt crack!!
