I've been reading rumours about Facebook shutting down on July 15, 2012.
Looks some people really want to see it crash badly it seems which doesn't matter to me either way to see its demise. I know some people will rant and rave but others will just find another playground to swing on, so to speak. Social media sites keep popping up left and right these days so if Facebook decides to take a turn for the worse, what will be the victor to replace it? What is the vision for 2012 and beyond?

Probally will never happen, esp since it just went public.

My wife would go off her rocker if it did though

it wont shut down. it's making too much money selling its users info and showing them ads.

I hadn't read anything yet about it shutting down (also highly doubt it
as well), but from what I've read the last couple days they're getting
into some deep shit with the SEC. Oh, and just read today that their
brand spanking new shareholders are pissed off enough that they're suing
anyone to do with the IPO...lol

We had an older gentleman come in early last week talking about the IPO.
I tried my best to warn him off...but he was committed to putting over
half his liquid assets into it, thinking even if he doesn't come out
ahead he'd just sit on it until he breaks even. He couldn't even imagine losing money on Facebook. I wonder how much he's freaking out right now.

there are chain letters about it shutting down several times a year.
also chain letters about how they will charge money.

the did it with myspace too. not worth discussing.

i still dont get why people send chainletters. one place i worked with had a huge problem with that.

well they would just send junk and on the bottom it would say 'if you believe in jesus...etc etc' or 'if you want the baby kittens to stop being clubbed' send this to everyone! amen!

i wonder if whoever creates these things is sitting back and laughing when he sees that they propagate so much.

From the looks of things, I imagine people might migrate over to Google+ if Facebook shuts down. I have no reason to believe that Facebook will shut down any time soon though. ;)

well google plus had a lot of promise.....THE FIRST DAY they opened their doors.

then it became obvious that they had NO clue what they were doing. just with google wave.

they alienated and blocked celebs by accident. one example is shatner got blocked for saying 'hi'. i'm surprised he's still using g+

right now i dont like facebook and i've had issues with g+ deleting my
funny photos and wanting to know my real name and bugging me about entering info on my friends.

i'd rather use nothing. these companies just want to get our information and sell it. remember when google was the cool company with the cool furnature and the free attitude. now they're evil. they're sniffing wifi traffic on their google cars FFS!.

i think we all need to get together and establish a way to increase anonymity and just say no to companies that want information they are not entitled to. it's just a sad thing that anonymity on the internet is widely criminals and sick people.

perhaps there can be some site that CAN'T sell your information
and then we can have a sort of openid login to all the other popular social and photo sites.

Well, I'm going to say you probably saw some rumor in a chain letter, and that's all. That said, however, they're currently being hit by a $15 billion class action suit for violation of Federal Wiretapping laws, and another class action suit for selective disclosure prior to the IPO, so whether or not they even make it til NEXT July is anybody's guess (to put it into perspective, they made a total of $1 billion in profits last year, which was their highest year to date). Personally, I'd love to see them fall, and haven't been on the site in just over 5 months now. I would HOPE Diaspora* or one of the other distributed social networks picked up their flailing user base (almost said customer, but thought better, as Facebook's customers are the ones buying ads...the users are the product), but really wouldn't be surprised if folks jumped on Google+ or something of that nature.

Facebook used smartly, can be an excellent promotion tool, especially to bring in people -- now that BBSing is accessible to everybody, more and easier than before.

That's true. Many businesses are on Facebook and are offering deals where if you "Like" them then you will be entered for a chance to win something. Having people "like" them on Facebook helps them because then all your friends will see that you "liked" something and then they might click on it to find more information.

This isn't limited to just Facebook. I've also heard about companies going into Second Life (an online 3D virtual world, similar to an MMORPG but it's open-ended without a specific goal).

Yeah, I checked out Google+ once or twice but never ended up using it much, mainly because most of the people I know still use Facebook. I like to keep in touch with people, and I'll go where my friends go. For now, that's Facebook.

That's interesting and laughable at the same time. :)

I agree. I remember when Google was just a nice search engine, but more and more these days I have a sinking bad feeling about Google. I'm not sure how much I should trust them anymore. Meanwhile, I use Gmail, and I have an Android phone and an Android tablet. It's either Android, Apple (control freaks and overpriced hardware), or Microsoft (the big market bully). You just have to pick the lesser of the evils.

I Prefer to choose Open-Source and les bigger companies. In fact,i just use Windows as a alternative to run programs today,linux/unix based systems are much more pratical and faster. I Also dont trust in Google anymore, since their new privacy agreement things got really unstable, its like every search you did was stored and used against you in the case they wanted. I Still use some of their products, like Orkut (Its stills the best Social network in my country, and the home for debate and discussions) and Plus/Facebook in a very uncompromised way, just to talk with friends and Family. I Was never a Big fan of Apple or Samsung/HTC/All android phone users, always prefered Nokia and their stul,as it always satisfied me. Internet is into a dark future,i feel that some big companies will crumble with the time and something very unpredictable is coming out. We will obviously have innovations and new features/advancements. And it till stay for a long time, although with some censure coming out.
