I think that Synchronet uses an old version of the SSH protocol of which the openssh project dropped support for. No wonder the error I get is "Handshake failed" - but with Putty it works (as it still supports that version of the protocol).
Am I correct?

How can I get it to work then?

Someone else has posted the necessary openSSH command-line to make the client connect (here on DOVE-Net). I don't have it memorized.
