• SBBS Upgrade

From IB JOE@VERT to All on Fri Nov 8 13:19:19 2013
I have installed sbbs and added all the files I need to have BBS say it's version 315b. I want to make it version 316 to be cool and hip like other SysOps and I'm running into issues. I download the sbbs_dev.zip wich says it's current, current as of yesterday, but when I added the exe files it says it cannot find a dll file and does not start.

    Sup??

    Thanx

    Joe

You did something wrong. When you say you "added the exe files", what do you mean precisely? Did you follow the directions in the readme.txt included in the
    .zip?

Which version of Windows are your running? That certain dll must be put I believe into Windows/system32 if you are running windows newer then XP.

Like mro suggested, you can download that DLL from a number of places.
It's not likely distributed with Synchronet, as it's a Microsoft
DLL... I think you'd look for the Microsoft Visual C++
    Redistributable package.

As always, Google is your friend, if you need to learn more about it.

Installing the Microsoft Visual C 10 Redistributable should fix this missing file.

And, while googling a question that has already posted, you can find answers quicker too, so I suppose it's not a bad idea to post a question somewhere, but I wouldn't count on getting a quick response. There's so many question/answer forums and a lot of them aren't that good. But yeah, googling is a great way to find information regarding *anything* you're needing. If it's been thought of, you just need to know what to look for.

what i had about forums, expecially *nix forums is there are people out there offering information to earn 'karma points' or whatever and they are just offering recycled BAD information that has propagated from other websites.

you can find the WRONG way to do something posted 20x on forums and websites due to this type of misinformation.

Someone I know recently joked that in order to get a good answer on some of the Linux and C programming forums, it might help to create a duplicate account to post wrong answers to your questions, in order to draw other people in to post correct answers - The theory being that people on those sites generally don't like providing real help but they also hate wrong answers, so they'll jump in to correct a wrong answer. :P

    It's a crapshoot.

Sometimes it's still quicker... my rule of thumb is search, locate,
test... if it works great, if not search some more. After I've done
this two or three times, if it's something important (to me, at least)
then I'll ask here... otherwise I put it on the backburner as a
    project to work on later.

This has worked out pretty well for me, and I feel I've learned more
by doing the research, trying stuff and failing and trying again, than
simply asking for the answer to be handed to me. You pick up a lot of
    related information along the way.

I have to agree... Looking on forums on the web is a crapshoot where the house almost ALWAYS wins..

I wish that these services that are out there would police their answers a little bit better... unfortunately, the internet is cluttered with a ton of
bad information that will just waste peoples time.

    Just my 2 cents. :)
