• File xfer capabilities in OpenBSD/Synchronet 3.16a

From Khelair@VERT to All on Fri Nov 8 12:27:02 2013
Well, I asked yesterday on the synchronet IRC channel and didn't receive
any response, so I'm not going to keep my fingers crossed, but I figured
I'd give it one more shot. Are there any Synchronet devs or knowledgeable coders who might be interested in helping me out this weekend digging
through the code and looking into the differences between OpenBSD and
Linux that may have caused SEXYZ, the standard sz/sy/sx/rz/ry/rx
    utilities, and g-kermit to not work for doing file transfers? The only capability that I don't have for troubleshooting right now is POTS;
everything else should be testable at this point.

Also, I was just noticing that I'm running Synchronet 3.16a from a little
over a year ago. I haven't done any regular updating and rebuilding, due
to all of the issues that I had compiling the original package, but last I saw, if I remember correctly, the package was at some incarnation of 3.16b right now.. Is there any chance that this might be behind some of the
issues? I don't know if any work has been put into the SEXYZ or other
um... I guess maybe telnetd or sshd facilities that might potentially
affect 8-bit file transmission (I'm assuming it's 8 and not 7 at this
point). I might try to upgrade that over this weekend too, though,
depending on how difficult of a process this is supposed to be (as well as setting up nightly re-builds after getting up to date with the CVS repository).

Any help or pointers in useful directions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

I vaguely remember occasionally hearing about certain people having trouble downloading, whereas other users can download without any problems. I think there are several variables that could affect file transfers. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to upgrade your Synchronet binaries. I'd also look into the telnet client being used and ensure that it's a recent version. I have a feeling those factors would be more likely to affect file transfers than the OS/distro that the BBS is running on.

He mentions POTS... I'm curious if it's working for Telnet, but not
    working for POTS?

    If that's the case, I notice that there's a -telnet option... I'm
guessing this is similar to -e for lszrz, for escaping control codes.
Perhaps try setting up a seperate sexyz command for POTS callers that
does not have the -telnet option.

There are various other options that can be tweaked as well. Also, if
it's POTS callers that are having trouble, you might find out if
they're on a pure copper line (at least at the premises), or if
    they're on some VOIP solution.

If we're talking about POTS or telnet, are you supplying a socket
    descriptor for the first argument?

In any case, after looking at the above, knowing your exact setup and
    sexyz configuration would be helpful.

I think he was getting at that, but he said he doesn't have the ability to test POTS.

He mentions POTS... I'm curious if it's working for Telnet, but not
    working for POTS?

It is the exact opposite at this point, actually. I have been
unable to do any setup or testing for POTS at this point due to no funding
to set up dedicated copper phone #, hardware, and software configuration
time. I've actually got the hardware, I'm just waiting on the other two. Otherwise I'd have to hijack someone else's phone line during specific
hours only for testing and it'd be over a shoddy VoIP through [I think
    copper] cable television wiring.

    If that's the case, I notice that there's a -telnet option... I'm
guessing this is similar to -e for lszrz, for escaping control codes. Perhaps try setting up a seperate sexyz command for POTS callers that
does not have the -telnet option.

I did not know about the -telnet option. I will actually give
that a shot right now and see if that fixes anything up.
After much attempted testing, I'm still trying to find libcl.a in
the 3rdp subdirectory under the standard /sync* or /sbbs/* heirarchy in
order to get that supporting library built. No such luck yet, but I will
keep digging and let you know posthaste if anything turns up in the
    immediate future.

There are various other options that can be tweaked as well. Also, if
it's POTS callers that are having trouble, you might find out if
they're on a pure copper line (at least at the premises), or if
    they're on some VOIP solution.

It is not, and I am quite aware of the problems that VoIP
introduces to standard POTS communications due to lags and different
routing mechanisms for various packets in transit between PBXen. There is none of that going on here, although I look forward to dealing with that
    evil hydra in the future.

If we're talking about POTS or telnet, are you supplying a socket
    descriptor for the first argument?

I am not aware of how to do this. Could you, or somebody else, explain futher? I will cut and paste the command line which is only
slightly modified in its variants for the ymodem/xmodem/kermit variants,
    of course:
%!sexyz %h -%p rz %f -telnet (with the -telnet being only added since I
have commenced testing with your most recent feedback).

In any case, after looking at the above, knowing your exact setup and
    sexyz configuration would be helpful.

If you could let me know exactly what logfiles I might cut and
paste the output from in order to handle this I will most certainly
oblige. I will be at the terminal for the majority of the day today and
on Synchronet IRC if you should like to discuss this matter in real time.
I really do appreciate you assistance. Hope you're having a good one!
    Namaste.

Looking at some archived messages from Rob on this, cryptlib is
mirrored in CVS, and you should have a directory "/sbbs/3rdp/src/cl".

The %h variable is for the socket handler; I haven't looked at the documentation to be sure, but I'm fairly certain the -telnet option
should probably be earlier in the command, since ZModem is a
multi-file protocol... best to be safe and perhaps put it after %h.

I haven't used SEXYZ in years... the few suggestions I had came from
    the docs.

There's a lot more you can do for debugging, such as set up an INI
file and change the logging level, enable debug mode, set where the
log should go, etc. For prior logging, I assume on Linux it goes to
wherever you have your current logging going (mine is /var/log/syslog,
may or may not be default, I can't remember).

aaaaaand with that I do believe it's all of the relevant config file pieces

Now that I've looked through all of it, just curious, but do you guys have something against text configuration file compression? ;) I always thought configuration files were best as binary, but I am from the age of 30-40MB RLL hard drives. Heh.
Thanks in advance, guys. I love you. *hugs*

I'll cut 'n paste my command lines here, not sure where to find anything else that might be useful. When I find a terminal client that works again I'll cut 'n paste those sz/sy/sx lines here too, though,
    and kermit if applicable.
Hex dumps are from file.0.cnf in /sbbs/ctrl, which appears to
be holding the applicable command line invocations:

Those dumps are a bit hard to read.

I would focus on ZModem first, since that's what most people would
use. Just check your config from SCFG. BTW, by default sexyz on unix
is disabled, and Synchronet relies on the unix packages. If you
downloaded and installed sexyz, you need to change the access
requirements and clear out NOT UNIX for sexyz. I think I saw that
somewhere in there on your configs.

Also get Ymodem-G working, the FlashTerm (fTelnet) that a lot of web browsers use for telnetting to BBSs uses yModem-G only.

True, but if ZModem works, YModem most likely will, too. Or at least,
you'll have troubleshot what would make it fail. By focusing on one,
you'll know what to set the others to, without driving yourself nuts.

Thanks for the advice. I'm still working right now on getting a version of syncterm compiled with the newer libpthread (13.x), as it was previously looking for a different version. Actually I think that I just got past that, and that I'm on to a new problem now, but I don't remember off the top of my head exactly what it was right now. Can't remember what the other old 'modem emulator' software was for linux that would provide a device where you could use 'ATDsitename.org' to 'dial' up a site via telnet in order to use something like minicom and standard file xfer capability on any old linux w/tcpip.
Hopefully this weekend I can find a solution so I can start testing. I've got all of the command lines changed, but still haven't been able to test it yet. :|

If we're talking about POTS or telnet, are you supplying a socket descriptor for the first argument?

I am not aware of how to do this. Could you, or somebody else,
explain futher? I will cut and paste the command line which is only slightly modified in its variants for the ymodem/xmodem/kermit variants,
    of course:
%!sexyz %h -%p rz %f -telnet (with the -telnet being only added since I
have commenced testing with your most recent feedback).

    See http://wiki.synchro.net/config:cmdline for details.

But the %h is the socket descriptor, so you have that. The -%p already expands to "-telnet" when appropriate (or something else like -ssh or -rlogin, when appropriate), so you shouldn't add the "-telnet" option.
