OK.. here's a new one on me. I've just moved to an area that ONLY has Comcast as a provider and in there insane wisdom require authorization for POP3 even on poert 110. Now, if I can ask the gurus to possibly add a name/pw section in the POP3 area that will allow communication between me and them. Or should I just setup a mail server here on my machine and screw them?

    Thanks for any help...

    Enjoy!

POP3 always requires a user/pass, am I missing something here? I log into my BBS with POP3 locally, seem to recall doing so from outside of my network, too.

It was late and I may have described my issue ass-backwards. Here is the issue. I send an email from my comcast account to Synchronet using my name and my domain (tequilamockingbirdonline.net). My settings in Synchro are as
    ollows:

    SMTP

    Transfer port: 465
    Submission port: 587

    POP3

    Listening Port: 110

    Sendmail:

    Enabled and using Relay Server

    Relay

    Server: smtp.comcast.net Port: 587

Login is checked with my necessary login info.

Now, I can send email out from the board BUT, when I try and send email TO the board I get the following error from Comcast:

    Final-recipient: rfc822; bill.mcgarrity@tequilamockingbirdonline.net
    Action: failed
    Status: 5.1.1
    Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 #5.1.0 Address rejected.
    Last-attempt-Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2013 05:42:45 +0000

I've checked all the ports to insure they are open. Everything is except port 25 which Comcast decided to block. I've even gone as far as to do a DNSlookup to make sure the IP# is correct.

I'm at a loss.... as when everything was set at 25 from my old provider, it worked. I figured just change the #'s and viola...

Another question, if I don't use the relay can I setup a virtual mail server and send/receive directly rather than going through Comcast?

    Thanks for any help...

why dont you just forward your email through vert?

on another note, do you REALLY need to be running an email server at home?

It's nice to be able to send out mail from the BBS locally. I don't allow external POP or even allow SMTP from outside of the LAN and it's been pretty quiet here.

Because I shouldn't have to. It's not a relay issue with outgoing, that works fine. It's incoming and what makes you think vert or any other mail server (I tried my work email and get the same error message from that server as well) can get through.

you should call up support and ask them if you are allowed. i've heard yes and no from various people over the years regarding comcast and servers.

you might have to get business class to have an open port.

i sent you a test email and i'm not getting any error msg but something certainly is weird.

i forward through my ISP and receive directly

Or use a mail redirection service. I have Comcast and they block port 25 outbound to prevent spambots. I use DNSExit.com; they are my primary mail exchanger and accept mail for my domain on port 25 as usual. They relay mail to me on a different port.

I explained I use DNSBL so they're processing my request to open my domain up. So hopefully this shit will be resoved within the next 24 hours... lol. I find it funny Comcast sends me 4-5 emails a day peddling their shit and I have to jump through hoops.

just so you know... it is now your ASS if someone goes on your bbs and uses it for spam and you are reported.

    I understand that....

you should disable the ability for users to send out email.

I can also put a delay on when the email gets sent or till I can review it. Appreciate the info...

They weren't too bad when I spoke to them. Actually, did everything via online chat with one of there techs. That is my domain. I purchased it through GoDaddy and use No-Ip as my dns although I don't have to. I could use my dns server here. It's good cause I'm still with a dynamic IP address and their DUC will update it automatically if it should ever change. Have it set for every 5 minutes to update ir needed.

That's how I used to do it as well. I'd just point all my CNAMEs to my dynamic DNS, which works.. but if in the future you want to do anything with IPV6 you would have to double configure it - one as a AAAA record at godaddy, and then hopefully no-ip has some kind of IPV6 forwarding. Of course, this is probably unnecessary for quite some time, but I've been tinkering just to have some basic knowledge about it when it is forced upon us some day.

I've realized that even though I have a dynamic IP address, the only way it will actually change is if the MAC address on my router changes, which is basically never - and when it does it's because I physically did something (like switch out my router, or update firmware maybe - so I would know to check to see if my IP has changed and fix things accordingly). So now I just aim my Godaddy address directly to myself, and bypass the whole dynamic DNS stuff.. though I still keep the dynamic DNS active just for the hell of it, it's pretty much unneeded now.

Glad you got it all worked out. I mentioned in another message all I've heard about Comcast was bad things, but I'd like to make a correction there. I think at the time I was thinking about Charter cable company, not Comcast. So I could definitely be wrong about always hearing bad things about Comcast - as I don't believe they offer any service anywhere around me. Charter though, anything I've heard about them is terrible. ;)

That's something that frustrates me about internet companies (and others). They hire people who know nothing about their services and technology, train them a bit, and then put them on the phones doing customer support. There's nothing really wrong with that, but sometimes it frustrates me that most of the time, you get a customer support agent that is only able to forward you to someone else, or may even give you wrong information. I suppose it has to be like that though, because there just aren't enough people within the company who know all about their services to provide all the customer support.

me. Charter though, anything I've heard about them is terrible. ;)

Several years ago, I was moving from DSL to Business cable in my business name.
I have two cable providers here, one is charter, the other is Wild Open West (used to be knology at the time).

I told both of them that I was signing up as a business customer, and i need a block of ip's and no ports blocked... Charter told me that wasn't possible (at the time) with them and they block port 25 and a few others.. Knology told me, look, you're a business account, and we want to support you in any way, and we don't block any ports whatsoever.

So that made my choice for me, and i've been a business customer of theirs since about 2001. :) Charter could have had that business because they actually had decent pricing and a lot more bandwidth, but knology gives me great support as a business too.. Granted, i pay more per month, but thanksgiving 2012, my internet went down. I called business support, and on thanksgiving within 2 hours, i had someone at my home fixing my internet. So i
can't complain with that kind of service.. You don't get that from home internet.

I can understand that Mark.. but by the same token I gave them a statment that I'd be using DNSBL's and other various protection. I guess it's the NSA... shhhhhhh... ;)

    Enjoy and Happy New Year!!

    Hello Jason,

On 30 Dec 13 09:19, Jason wrote to Access Denied:

I told both of them that I was signing up as a business customer, and
i need a block of ip's and no ports blocked... Charter told me that
wasn't possible (at the time) with them and they block port 25 and a
few others.. Knology told me, look, you're a business account, and we
want to support you in any way, and we don't block any ports
    whatsoever.

Sounds about right. My in-laws live about 30 minutes from here (in another county) and had Charter at one time. I remember port 25 was also blocked there as well, so that must just be something Charter automatically does.

As far as your other option, and the one you chose, that's exactly how they should treat you if they want your service - and want to keep you for the long haul.

So that made my choice for me, and i've been a business customer of
theirs since about 2001. :) Charter could have had that business
because they actually had decent pricing and a lot more bandwidth, but knology gives me great support as a business too.. Granted, i pay more
per month, but thanksgiving 2012, my internet went down. I called
business support, and on thanksgiving within 2 hours, i had someone at
my home fixing my internet. So i can't complain with that kind of service.. You don't get that from home internet.

Yep. Charter does have better pricing than most, but you get what you pay for in that case.. from what I've heard anyways. I've been pretty happy with Time Warner as far as service and reliability goes, just their customer support for residential service at the tier 1 level is terrible. That's fine though, I ask for tier 3, and if they don't give them to me instantly, I ask my question, which is usually far beyond their scope of knowledge. I'm then put on hold for a few seconds until a tier 3 tech comes on. :)

Other than that, I don't have a business here, and the difference in price between business class service and residential here is enormous. Right now I have 30mb/5mb internet for a fraction of the price it would be for business class - which I doubt they even offer because the bandwith is usually more even, like 5mb/5mb or something for 300/month.

I got an offer I couldn't refuse from AT&T Uverse at one point, and Time Warner at the time wouldn't budge on their price until I told them I was leaving. By then it was too late and I ended up with AT&T. That lasted a whopping 3 months until I was so fed up with not only their terrible service here, but their customer support was even worse than what I had (which was very hard to believe that was possible). Went back to TW with a locked in deal in place when I re-signed up. No contract, and saving a good amount on my HDTV service and I'm back to comfort with reliability and stability, so I can't complain much about the residential service I get here from the cable company.

    Regards,
    Nick

there's reasons for these rules, and it's almost always some abusive customer.

In the case of blocking port 25, it was unmaintained Windows XP SP1 boxes that got infected and botnetted into a SPAM net - after that most ISPs started blocking SMTP.

I'd assume it was a typical "remove services then upsell a commercial account at 3x the price" but bot SPAM was pretty bad.

OK.... as per mro's suggestion I contacted Comcast. Seems I needed to fill >> out a form stating that I am the executor of the email server and that
I've taken steps to insure spam isn't passed. I explained I use DNSBL so
they're processing my request to open my domain up.

That's good to hear. Last time I spoke with Comcast, they said pretty much unequivocally that the only way to get inbound SMTP on port 25 was to get
a business class account. Maybe I'll call back and see if I get someone a little more knowledgeable.

I'd be interested in hearing about that as well. I recently moved and now have Comcast as my ISP. Besides my local systems (which I'm rebuilding and expanding, now that I can...), I also have a hosted system; using an alternate port between my local mail server and the hosted system.

well they effectively prevented you from running an email server.
i'm sure if someone would have reported you for spamming, they'd be right on it and contact you or suspend your account. with timewarner they fuck with your dns settings so it directs you to a page notifying you to call them.
