Nothing has been done lately, but there are still plans for it. No timeline.

Don't hold your breath though. I've been wanting it for quite a while. I even stopped trying to run Synchronet for a while because I was annoyed with the lack of LFN support. Though, I didn't get as far into the setup as I am these days, but about 10~12 years ago, I had gotten my BBS back up, for about 1 month, and shut back down again. heh. Now I've been up for several months, and going to continue it. I /want/ LFN support, but BBS's aren't just about file bases. LFN however would make naming mod-packs a lot easier than the restrictive 8.3 filename support. :)

we have the 8.3 on the left, and the lfn displayed on the right in the descriptions.

for file transfers of long file names i have a protocol script that uses rar and creates a filename with a random number and it sends to the user.

it's actually pretty nice because the file is then organized in the bbs file structure. example bbsfiles/doors/lord/igms/igmname1.zip

you can also get long file names via the ftp server

heh. That's not actually very reasonable, IMHO.

    That's... Interesting... Works on Linux?

You can... But they don't work very well in the actual terminal client as a result if you do. :)

all i'm doing is calling the archiver and sending it via zmodem. so yes, works on any os.

i mean you can use an ftp client if you want to download long file names.

downloading from bbses today is not a real big deal. it's just something that users do every once in a while. file bases are really not a draw anymore. people download from me, but i dont think they mind about the long file names.

i dont put that many lfns on my filebase anyways, but like i said i have that protocol script setup so they can download it all in one archive with the lfn intact.

oh really? i didnt know that. i just run my linux bbs for the bbs aspects.
i guess he could install his own ftp server and have it mirror the user system and filebase. i use pureftpd and it's easy to script that stuff.

Actually, the problem is the exact opposite... Linux doesn't do SHORT filename support. The Win32 builds keep the filesystem generated short filename, and look up the corresponding long filename at specific points. Since there's no 8.3 enforced filenames on Linux, Linux can't support this feature.
