I have a question. I have a lot of different ip addresses hitting my
server. They try the log in name of root or something else. I notice it all day.
What can I do to stop these guys? Is there any way to block them or what? Thanks for any reply.

having a server on the internet means you get constant attacks. you can use ipdeny to generate country lists and then add them to your ip.can

See http://wiki.synchro.net/config:filter_files for details.
e.g. "192.168.*"
You can't filter "ranges" of IP addresses however.

I've been putting ip addresses in ip.can all night. Thanks for the advice with ipdeny. I'm going to try that.

I use peerblock (peerblock.com) on my BBS machine and block the following countries - it's about 5 million IPs. :/ It drastically cut down on the amount of crap login attempts.
Ukraine, Czech Republic, China, Russia, Romania, Taiwan
