• State of 3.17 code?

How's 3.17 looking? A few weeks back there was some discussion that people were still shaking out bugs, I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading from 3.16 out of CVS from right before 3.17 came out?

There are still some major features pending, and some stuff that's only weakly tested. I think all the known bugs have had a fix committed, but the unknown ones are still out there.

IPv6 and TLS are really the only "big" new features so far that I can think of, and TLS with anything except a self-signed certificate isn't easy to set up yet.

If neither of those are useful to you, there's not a feature reason to upgrade.

It really comes down to the question of "Would you rather find bugs and work to get them fixed, or run a BBS without encountering bugs?"

3.17 is not actually "out". It's just the next version number we chose to increment to when Deuce imported his IPv6 & TLS patch-set he'd been working on for a year or so. The version number of the next release actually hasn't been determined. One thing is for sure, the next SBBS release won't be 3.17a, as that would be confusing for those that upgraded-to or installed a current development build with that version number.

For the record. I haven't had a single problem (that I know of) with IPv6 yet, and I've had it tested by others. Thank you, kind sir!

The Synchronet Control Panel absolutely has IPv6 issues, and it's likely that BAJA modules and maybe even JS modules that use IP addresses will also have issues.

I haven't tested the .can support yet with IPv6, so there may be problems there as well (especially since IPv6 addresses are generally not fully specified).

I don't use the control panel, and I *think* the only JS module I have that uses IP addresses would be dyndns.js if anything. I don't think I've had any problems with that.

Haven't done any of that yet either. I haven't seen any attacks via IPv6 just yet, but I'm sure it'll rear it's ugly head at some point.

dyndns doesn't (yet) support IPv6 addresses, and since the server is IPv4 only, it can't auto-detect your IPv6 address anyway. Further, it would only be able to detect what's used for the current connection, not both IPv4 and IPv6 at the same time.

It's one of those not-very-important things we have on our plate... for now, if you want your QWKID.synchro.net host to have an AAAA record, your best bet is to ask Digital Man directly.

Nah. It's not a big deal. I only use QWKID.synchro.net for dyndns and irc, but don't advertise it. So as long as it continues to link up to the current setup in place, I don't see a need for change.
