• Losing Settings

From Gargoyle@VERT to All on Tue Jan 26 06:34:09 2016
    Hi All,

I was hoping to pick your brains. Thanks in advance!!

    SBBS V3.17/Linux
    Debian GNU/Linux 8.2 (jessie)
Running as non root user (Properly set user and group in sbbs.ini file) Daemonize=false

I am losing a couple settings, I have not been able to figure out what
sequence of events causes this. Once it was after running /sbbs/exec/scfg
and another time it was right after I forced a Dove Net run.

    1. I lose the export SBBSCTRL=/sbbs/ctrl environment. I notice it when I
try to run the configuration and it says it cannot find the config file. In
    the /etc/init.d/sbbs file I have
    export SBBSCTRL=$SBBSROOT/ctrl
    And I have also tried
    export SBBSCTRL=/sbbs/ctrl
    Just to be sure.

    2. Synchronet loses control over Telnet port 23 to xinetd. To gain it back
I have to shut down the bbs, restart xinetd, find the xinetd process,
manually kill that process and restart the bbs, then sbbs owns the pid.

I definitely lose the environment variable if I were to reboot, but sbbs
    does start.

    Thanks,
    Randy

    Hi Again,

Okay I figured out the environment part, I guess I had to post the message
to think about it, I logged out of SSH and back in and it hit me that I
needed to set the environment in my profile (SInce sbbs is not running as
root. So it leaves me with just the Telnet issue.

    Thanks,
    Randy

If your not using xinetd for anything else I would disable it. If you need to have it running you can probably disable it's telnet support so that synchronet doesn't have trouble binding port 23.

Thanks Al, that is exaclty what I did, I wasn't sure if SBBS would bind, but it did When increase the bind time and failure numbers I noticed it did not fix it. I just commented out the xinetd telenet info in the conf file.

I am losing a couple settings, I have not been able to figure out what sequence of events causes this. Once it was after running /sbbs/exec/scfg and another time it was right after I forced a Dove Net run.

On my Gentoo Linux SBBS Sysyem.. I also manually run my SBBS in a screen session by
typing screen -S SBBS that way I can detach from it and reconnect from any terminal via SSH or
console.. I do this by screen -x SBBS.. the export thing I do manually everytime. also I loose
it if I open a different console session. have to rerun the export command if I want to config
something.. far as ports go.. for some reason on my system a reroll doesn't free the ports..
they keep retrying...seem to be in use. I find it best just to quit the SBBS console and reboot
it with ./sbbs to get things going again.. I also wait atleast 3 to 4 minutes.. I'm not sure
why ports don't free up right away even after quitting.. there seems to be some kind of ghost
sesssion running.. where it thinks the ports seem to be in use... What I am saying is I wait a
bit.. before trying to reroll or sbbs boot anything.. even more so if it was allready
running...don't know if any of this helps.. I use pstree to see if sbbs may still be running.

I was able to get the export environment set in my bash profile, so got that solved, it was really only a problem for me when I ssh'ed in and the environment wasn't set.

I commented out the telnet in xinet.d and solved the binding issue.

I do get error logs of a port conflict, but everything is working and I don't know which port is causing the issue. Web, telnet, email, Fido, binkd, it is all working. I did notice on some docs about the ssh port being in the sbbs.ini and I bet I have mine set wrong, I will go check that (using non-standard ssh port)

For me sometimes I have to type the problem out then something clicks in my head :-)

Thanks for the tip... I did read the wiki link and made the setting.. REUSEADDR=1 in ctrl/sockopts.ini Never really looked at it as a problem. Now maybe I will be
able reroll the bbs without having to quit it. Pretty sure the only services running are from
SBBS.. Hope this helps other linux sysops as well.. Thanks Again.
