I just wanted to know if anyone else has been experiencing anything like this. About a month ago, my PC shut down. I checked the system logs and didn't see anything that would cause it. So, I did what any red-blooded American would do - I blamed Microsoft and turned off all Windows updates.

Two nights ago, my PC shut down again. I have no idea what could be causing it - perhaps power surge or something that would be my only guess at this point. However, this time, when I booted up the PC, something tried to format my A: drive. Luckily I don't have an A:L drive and so I was presented with a prompt to insert disk into drive A:. I closed it. I can't find anything that would have caused it.

Today, I checked on the PC and noticed my system date and time were wrong. Something changed it to January 2002 and the time was about 11 hours off. So I changed the time and date back to correct time and watch as 3 days worth of QWK packets unpacked.

Then, I shut down my PC, waited 5 minutes and turned it back on. The clock seems fine and nothing is trying to format floppies.

At this point I don't know what could be causing it, but I can't help but wonder if someone is able to hack into the PC without leaving a trace or if it could be a virus. The only ports I have open are the ones that the BBS and binkd use. And the only software I have installed are BBS, binkd, dosbox and TightVNC for local logons (and no, the ports are closed on the router so no one from outside can get in)

Has anyone else noticed similar behavior on their BBS PCs?

m$ is a good target but you really should suspect your power supply... i just went through a round or two of problems with my main machine... the main thing being that it would just shut off at random times... testing the power supply with one of those eld testers showed that it was fine... that is until about three weeks later when it decided to explode under my feet! it was like a chain
of firecrackers going off! this is a 600watt thermaltake power supply with a five year warranty... it is protected by a UPS and there's been no anomolies recorded... the thing just decided to let go after starting shutting down weeks
back... thankfully it is a decent item with a good warranty... the RMA will be fulfilled in a week or so...

What's a good way to check temps?

There are software programs that will show the temperatures reported by temperature sensors on your motherboard etc. (if your motherboard has them). This is one such program:
